Question about coil whine

So I recently decided I should open my case and see how my video card works and suprizingly I found out about that neat little thing called coil whine. I've never heard of it before but now that I know it, I would be interested in knowing do all video cards literally coil whine no matter what, but it's just about how loud it is? Because you see, my video card does coil whine but nowhere near enough so that I can hear it outside of opening my PC. So just wondering am I just unlucky that I got it or I got lucky that it's low noise. BTW my the video card in question is GTX 970 Strix.

P.S After trying to figure out where it is exactly coming from I am starting go wonder if it's the video card in the first place - for some strange reason I hear it as it is coming from somewhere around the processor, could it be my motherboard? I have a high end motherboard Z170 Deluxe so I would guess it has nice components in it which shouldn't allow such things?

Hey,

Coil whine can basically be in any component in the computer, but graphics cards are by far the worst generally. It happens when coils of wire very often in the form of an inductor ( which are used to create filter circuits to block signals of a certain frequencies, and to store energy for a short period of time in a magnetic field ) vibrate. Then these vibrations cause sound.

For you graphics card, you would be considered fairly lucky. Coil whine can be really annoyingly loud. The GTX 970 is especially bad for it.

All video cards will generate coil whine of some sort. And although how loud it is does have an effect, it is also the frequency of the noise. Very high frequency noise will not be heard so easily or at all.

For high end components, they can cause just as much coil whine as cheap ones. Some manufactures don't even see it as a fault / problem due to it not affecting the components performance.

Thank you mate! Really appreciate your answer, it was really helpful :)! One more thing, if right now I have very low coil whine which can only really be heard if I open my case, is there any chance that if I change my PSU it would disappear even though as of now, it probably comes from the video card? Is the chance worth a try since I was planning to buy a new PSU in hope of it fixing this problem and for other stuff too but mainly that?

If you have to open the case to hear it at all, I would not consider it a problem or try to fix it.

On a note of the PSU, they are actually a big contender in creating the coil whine on it's own, but as said above. If you cannot hear it, there is absolutely no issues with it being there.
