I was wondering because I have never built a PC before, when I take the CPU out of the plastic, is it ok to place the CPU down on the RAM slots to orientate it correctly for placement?

Thanks.

Solution
It shouldn't if the PSU isn't on. The biggest danger to the chip is electro-static discharge, which is not a threat if there is no power to the motherboard. The RAM slots are completely smooth on the top, so you should be fine.

Don't worry. Linus was certain that the CPU wouldn't be damaged, or else he wouldn't have set it there.

so its ok to rest the cpu on the ram slots to turn it the correct way?
