Standing in a safe spot, tell your familiar "stand your ground". Now
move forward past its position, and keep the fight away from him.
When you are ready for him to move again, tell him "follow". IF he's
in "hearing range", that is... if he's too far away you won't even
have the option to talk to him. You may have to go back and get him
if that happens. Also, using this plan, you'll find your familiar
gets stuck from time to time, and also that he may run a different
route than you'd like, and get into trouble by coming in "hearing"
range of the bad guys.
With a familiar (but not a henchman, etc. etc.) there's a way out of
this; possess him. Now you can move him to exactly where you want
him, even have him do stuff, use his skills and so on. Sometimes
thats hard to do though, and as I said, it only works on familiars.
So the -other- trick (this one is a bit cheaty) to this is that when
you go thru an area transition, your familiar, henchmen, summoned
creatures etc. will all pop up into your arrival spot with you. This
can allow you to move a familiar thru an entire level by standing him
at the entrance, moving all the way to the exit, going out and then
coming back in.
Even more cheaty than this, you can do the same trick to any spot on
any map by saving your game, then loading it. Apparantly NWN doesn't
save the location of your familiar et al; so when you reload they will
all be standing right next to you. This can be a real pain if you are
deliberately moving around with your buddies parked out of trouble,
save, and then run into trouble and have to reload. But its a life
saver if your companions get stuck somewhere due to a bug in the
software. And it -does- work if you use it deliberately even if
there's no bug.
Its up to you how far you want to go, where you draw the line between
"I'm using the system, because if the situation was real I'd be able
to give him better instructions" and "eww, thats cheating, why not
just go into debug mode and DM teleport him around instead!"
