After buying the best computer I ever had (and paying the price for it, lol), I'm now looking to replace my current monitor. However due to the lack of space to place a new monitor I'll simply upgrade to a flat screen. Now, I'm a hardcore gamer, so I am looking for a high resolution screen. I also bought an FX 5900 256mb Ultra and I noticed that it had such a white port thingy, digital port like some call it. Now my question is, what screen is best for me? And, is it better to get a 19" or a 17"? Money is no issue, I need quality and lifetime here.

Is it a bad thing if there is smoke coming out of my case?

I wish there was some good news for you but as you'll quickly notice from the latest THG LCD article they all seem to suck for gaming (Unless you go 17").

The key thing to look at is typical response rates. All 19"+ LCD screens are about 25ms but some 17" screens are at 16ms which is acceptable for gaming.

I've been waiting for 6 months for a fast 19" monitor and bet it will not be until spring that one comes out. If the response rate is not fast enough you will see annoying ghosting and jittery performance as if a CRT monitor was running at 60hertz or something.

That white digital thingy is a DVI output. DVI is the better way to go if your devices support it. The reason being, it's a true Digital to Digital conversion, meaning that there's no need for lossy DAC (Digital to Analog Conversion). With high end devices, you WILL see a difference between DVI and Analog connections.

The above post is right on. You'll be hard pressed to find a 19" panel with a total response time better than 25ms. What does that mean for gaming? Ghosting. If you play fast paced games or watch movies on your PC, you're going to see the effects of pixels that cant keep up with the displayed images. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. Even on many of the 16ms, 17" panels ghosting can be noticed, but it's not nearly is bad. The big thing there is just to do your research and make sure you find a panel that's going to do what you want it to. There isnt going to be a whole ton of difference, simply because the LCD panels themselves are mostly made by the same manufacturer (AU Optronics).

A month or so ago, my ancient 21" Hewlett Packard CRT died on me, violently. I was forced to make the decision between CRT and LCD. I do alot of gaming, alot of graphics editing, and alot of text (ie message boards and coding type stuff). I determined the best choice for me at the time to be a good quality 19" CRT. It was the only way I was going to get the resolutions, the contrast, and the response time that I demanded out of my equipment.

Sorry to write you a novel on the matter, I hope it's been helpful.

I'm totally confused at the moment. I'm looking for a monitor to replace my old 15" CTX CRT but i don't know which model to choose. I've read all the articles on THG about LCD's but I'm still trying to make my decision which one to choose.
So which of the 17" models would you recommend for dedicated gamer and preferably with goog warranty (are there any zero tolerance for bad pixels 16/20 ms monitors?) and can someone tell me how they look while using the lower resolutions (as my G3 ti 200 won't be able to display 1280x1024 with good number of fps:).
Thx for help

So, taking your advice into consideration and looking around a bit to do research, then I THINK that the Hercules 17" flat panels are best then for gaming? If so can someone please tell me which Hercules screen to get with a DVI port?

Is it a bad thing if there is smoke coming out of my case?

I like the Viewsonic with a 16ms respone time, sony and mitsubishi also make good ones to. There are lots of 17 inch lcds now that are good for games and performance is good in most.

If he doesn't die, he'll get help!!!

Ok, tried and tested both a Viewsonic VP171b and a Hercules 920 pro DVI, and surprise surprise, the Hercules is by far superior from the Viewsonic. The Viewsonic has massive color problems in certain games, some colors are too bright and others too dark. Now I know you can manage the colors, but that means that every time you want to play a game you have to fiddle with the controls for a half hour first. Not my style, sorry!

As for the Hercules... can't praise this baby enough! Superior color management in games, no ghosting whatsoever, not even in Splinter Cell, and the picture quality is superior. This screen has the quality of an excellent CRT monitor. And best part of all, no OSD fiddling. The auto function is excellent, unlike the one from Viewsonic...

-> Please note that I have tested these screens personally and they were both tested on the same system, with a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, so you can't say I have an inferior graphics card...
Following games were used for the test:
-The Temple of Elemental Evil
-Neverwinter Nights
-Enclave
-Age of Mythologie
-Unreal 2
-Unreal Tournament 2003
-Battlefield 1942

Personal conclusion: I never realised what a disaster that Viewsonic is until now. It is simply below average when it comes to gamingperformance. The Hercules on the other hand is a true jewel. It only requires some minor tweaking and voila, no more tweaking needed, happy gaming! Best thing of all, the Hercules is CHEAPER then the Viewsonic. The prices for both the screens in my own shop are:
ViewSonic VP171b: 560 Euro
Hercules 920 Pro DVI: 500 Euro

If you're looking for a good 17" TFT gaming screen then by all means, buy a Hercules, it is the best TFT screen I have ever had the pleasure to work with!
