Hi all,
I am looking to upgrade my current rig from a i5-6500 to an i7-8700K. This is going to be a huge improvement, so I was wondering if there were any glaringly parts of my setup that might cause issues with it? I'm looking to do high end gaming.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-K
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Ram: 8GB (I think DDR3)

Will I encounter any issues that you know of? What would you suggest for upgrading my rig next?
Thanks <3

Solution
Z170 was/is a DDR4 mainboard, and, support on this board tops out at 7700K, so, naturally, the 8700K will require a Z370/Z390 mainboard upgrade as well...

Thanks for the heads up. I would prefer to stick with Intel.
Would an i7 9700K be a better choice in your opinion then?

I'll have to get a new motherboard by the looks of it. Thoughts on a Aorus Z390?

If you are not in a rush to upgrade now, then wait for Intel i7-10700K. It has 8c/16t vs i7 9700K (8c). The price should be comparable. Regard to your choice, I think it is good but I will leave to others to see if they have better recommendation.

I'm looking at getting everything in the next week or so, so I'm not entirely sure I'll wait for new releases. This would be a huge improvement on everything I've got anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions

Okay, I think I'll go with the i7 9700k and a z390. Thanks all.
I like the 9700K for gaming.
The single thread clock rates on all cores will be in the 5.0 range.
I think you will want a good cooler to get the most out of your processor.
What is the make/model of your case?
A top dual tower air cooler like the Noctua NH-D15s will do the job if your case has 160mm headroom.
You also might want to look into the Intel performance maximiser app:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-cpu-auto-overclock-performance-maximizer,6179.html

This forum seems to be hot on ryzen because of the large numbers of cheap threads.

Thanks for the app, I'll definitely use it!
I've got a Corsair Carbide Spec-01
https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categories/Products/Cases/Carbide-Series™-SPEC-01-Red-LED-Mid-Tower-Gaming-Case/p/CC-9011050-WW

I'm doubtful it will have space for something that large, but see what you think.

Edit: Checked the specs, only has space for 150mm. Are there any smaller ones that come to mind, or am I going to be looking at upgrading my case too? 😧

Love the case, but the 150mm height available is a killer.

Your best options may be a H60 aio liquid cooler like this
https://www.newegg.com/corsair-liquid-cooling-system/p/N82E16835181140?Description=corsair h60&cm_re=corsair_h60--35-181-140--Product&quicklink=true

or a noctua NH-U9S
https://www.newegg.com/noctua-nh-u9s/p/N82E16835608067

Neither would do a 9700K justice.
I'm going to get a new case and the fan you originally suggested, then. Thanks so much!

Any suggestions on a decent case? Do they really make that much difference?

Cases are a personal thing.
Above all, buy a case that you love. It will be with you for a long time.
I would want a case with at least two 120/140mm front intakes that are filtered.
I would want at least 160mm available for a good air cooler.
You may have other requirements such as RGB "bling" or a dvd slot.

Here is a fractal design Meshify for $90 that ticks my requirements:
https://www.newegg.com/black-fractal-design-meshify-c-tg-atx-mid-tower/p/N82E16811352084
I would add two 140mm front intake fans.
140mm moves more air quietly.
These are good:
