Stumbled across a video explaining how Z790 chipset works. In the video manual is referenced and says:

When M.2 1 is occupied with SSD device, PCIEX16(G5) will run x8 only.

I have b760 aorus elite (i know it's not Z790 but I guess they are similar) with m.2 in the first slot under cpu. So that's the slot using cpu instead of chipset lanes but can't find any info if it drops to x8 mode if m. 2 is in the first slot. My question is should I use one of the slower slots (chipset slots) so I run x16, or it doesn't matter. BTW also running only one m2 in slot 1

Might want to also mention the make and model of your M.2 SSD.

If you look into your motherboard's manual;
page 6, the block diagram for the motherboard, states that the SB suffix M.2 slots have no relation to the CPU, meaning you can run 3 M.2 NVMe SSD's without worry.
Crucial p3 1tb nvme, so to clarify any slot I use on the mobo will have no impact?
I'm using one directly under cpu socket? I'm using m2a_cpu one doesn't that imply it's connected to the chipset?
