Hey guys, new to the forum. Not sure if this question has already been asked so here goes.

I’m currently in the process of building a new PC and will be wiping my SSD and HDD clean for my install. However, I’ve already purchased and loaded a copy of windows 10 to my current rig. Can I make a copy of my windows 10 program from this build, (upgraded from 8 to 10 with product key) and install it via flash drive to my current build or will I need to purchase a whole new OS. Thanks for the input guys.

Solution

For an Upgraded Win 10, you can transfer that license to new hardware.
For the OS activation, read and do this before you change any parts:...
If your current Windows license is for an OEM version, it's not transferrable. If it's not OEM, you can transfer it only if you remove it from the current rig, contact Microsoft, and get them to OK it. Otherwise you'll need a new license unless you want to go the Insider route with pre-release versions of Windows.

For an Upgraded Win 10, you can transfer that license to new hardware.

You'll obviously need to do a full reinstall on the new hardware.
Create a new Win 10 install on a USB stick here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Of course, now your old system has no OS license.

A Win 10 that was Upgraded from 7 or 8.1 no longer carries that OEM restriction. It is transferable.

I bought the key non-oem as it was basically like what you would get off the shelf or online through a retailer. So since the key isn’t locked by an oem builder it’s not restricted to just that machine correct?
