Question about network storage drives

Can a network storage drive such as the WD MyBook Live 1tb connect directly to a laptop through ethernet to access/transfer files?
Sorry if its abit of a nooby question.

Yes. you can plug this directly into the computer and access it as a shared folder in the Network folder, or access it through your internet browser.

Direct connect only works with Gb E, If you have the 10/100Mbps then you do need a reverse T/R network cable

When connecting 2 PCs directly without a switch or router, you need a "crossover cable".

The same is true with this device. If you want to connect it directly without a router or switch, a standard ethernet cable will not work. you will need a crossover cable

Technically speaking; it means a special cable that aligns the transmit and receive pins. (So that it's not speaking into the speaker and listening to the microphone.)

As FireWire2 stated; if the laptop has gigabit ethernet (10/100/1000) You will not need a crossover cable.

If it has standard "Fast Ethernet" (10/100) You will need the crossover cable.

Yeah I do have gigabit ethernet so thats okay. Just need to find a proper router to replace my shoddy orange livebox!!

If you have the money, yes. I replaced my old router (The one I suggested to you.) with that Cisco E4200 for security reasons and I love it.
(Note: For me, the Netgear was faster and had better signal, but the Netgears administration sucked and the firewall was too basic. On my Cisco E4200, the scheduler doesn't work, if you have it shut off the internet at a specific time, it wont come back on, you have to reset the router manually.)

Yes, I was using this device at work to run:
A 16 channel ARM HD-DVR surveillance system streaming all 16 channels to 1 client and 1 channel at a time to another client.,
A Windows Server 2008 R2 PC running QB POS 9.0 serving 5 clients
5 Win7 workstations
3 Win7 wireless laptops
6 wireless smartphones
2 wireless printers
4 shared wired printers
and a partridge in a pear tree.

(This device was personally handling the ARM DVR, the POS system, & all wireless devices.)

I was so sadly disappointed when it started to kick in that the Netgear was better.
I myself would always pick Cisco over anyone.
Numbers don't lie, and the Netgear performed faster in the same environment.

Whoa hold on, the netgear I posted is not the right one.

The Netgear I owned was the n600, not the n300. Big difference.
