Hello all,
I have MSI Z170A M7 motherboard with four sticks of Vengeance LPX 4 GB of RAM which gives me 16 GB of RAM. I just ordered two sticks of Patriot Viper 4 (16 GB per stick) which will give me 32 GB of RAM.

MSI Z170A M7 Motherboard has four DDR4 RAM slots (two dual slots). It is currently populated with 4 sticks of 4 GB (16 GB total).

Question 1. Is Patriot Viper 4 (2x16) comptablie with MSI Z170A M7 motherboard?

Question 2. If I put down 2 sticks of Patriot Viper 4 and keep two sticks of Vengeance LPX (2x4 GB) which will give me 40 GB, would that work? If not, then I will just stick to Patriot Viper 4 32 GB which I will have two slots free.

Thanks! Tom

The 2x16GB should be just fine.

Adding 2x4 to the mix (for 40GB) certainly can be problematic - any time you mix & match, you can get odd errors etc. It certainly can "work" in some instances, but 2x16GB should be a much smoother experience all round.

What are you looking to achieve with 32GB (or more)?

I'm upgrading to 32 GB because of Cities Skylines and possible Planet Zoo. Cities Skylines' minimum is 8 GB but with mods, more RAM. Plus I looked at my memory performance, I only have 11.7 GB free out of applications that used it. I think I will just stick to 2x16 and sell 4x4.
