So I just built a new system which I will post now:

i7 6800k Stock settings
MSI X99A Krait Edition SLI
32 GB G-Skill 3000mhz
MSI GTX 970 (Carryover)
EVGA 1000 watt power supply
120gb kingston ssdnow
16tb worth of hard drives

So when I built this rig I went with the 6800k because I always just buy a single card solution instead of SLI/Crossfire and all I wanted to do was run single card + x4 m.2 ssd which I haven't got yet.

Today at work I was given 2 EVGA GTX 980 SC cards for free.

My question is it worth it to return my 6800k and go for a 5930k (additional $200) (6850K is out of budget I also live in Canada so rip can$829.99 for 6850K...) just for the extra lanes(40)? or should I be fine running x16/8/4 (I think I can do this with my board/cpu 28 lanes on cpu)

Thanks in advance!

Solution
40 Lane cpus will run x16/x16, 28 Lane cpus will run x16/x8. This won't be an issue at all since the gtx980 won't fill the bandwidth of a pcie 2.0 x8, nevermind a pcie x8 3.0

going from x16 to x8 is only a decrease of 1 - 2 % in performance

so it is not worth $200
