Are they any faster than the traditional ssd's connected via sata cables?

Yes, considerably so.
But they are not worth the price premium for the same capacity over SATA ones, unless you are doing some heavy duty stuff like running a database server or compiling.
The difference in real world usage, unless transferring huge files all teh time, is there, but minimal, and not worth the 2x price.
