More importantly, because if you attack Sarevok *before* proving
him guilty, you *are* guilty of murder, or at least attempted murder.
Likewise if you harm the real dukes Belt and Liia, and thus make them
angry at you. (So using Fireballs to take down the doppelgangers is
right out.) In either case, what would happen in a real RPG is that
the remaining Dukes (Belt, Liia and "not proven, therefore innocent
until PROVEN guilty" Sarevok) would hightail it out of the building,
which would be flooded by wave after wave of Flaming Fist mercenaries,
and you would end up overwhelmed by sheer weight of numbers, and
either killed in battle or captured and executed for the attempted
murder of which you really ARE guilty, i.e. assaulting a Duke. So the
game kills you off just as its way of shortcutting that whole charade.
If Belt and Liia are dead, there's nobody left to present your
evidence to but Sarevok, so he'd frame you for the murder of the other
Dukes and have you killed. (Remember, you're already on the run for
the murder of the Iron Throne bosses, whether you killed them or not.)
Once again, the game kills you off just as the way of shortcutting the
whole charade of either drowning you in waves of Flaming Fist
mercenaries or letting you surrender, be arrested, have Sarevok get
his papers back (so removing your means of proving HIM guilty) and add
the murder of the other two Dukes to the already-long list of charges
against you...
So you have to save either Belt, Liia or both WITHOUT using
area-effect damaging spells such as Fireball on the doppelgangers,
because these risk harming some of the Dukes. Dispel Magic, to dispel
their Haste and Blur effects, is a good thing - unfortunately it will
also dispel YOUR haste too if you are hasted, so don't bother buffing
for the fight but make your fighters carry a potion of speed each and
glug it immediately after landing the Dispel Magic. Then the
doppelgangers will not be hasted or blurred, and you WILL be hasted -
suddenly the fight is in your favour.
If you have some of the Rings of Free Action that exist in the
game (or the sword Spider's Bane), get your fighters wearing or using
them and have your mages throw a couple of Webs into the mix - the
doppelgangers aren't immune so they will be held, but characters with
free action are immune, so you'll even be hitting opponents who can't
hit back. The Dukes have better saving throws than the doppelgangers
too, and Belt is no mean fighter himself.
