question about upgrading ram

Question about upgrading ram.

I currently have one 8gb stick of 1600 ram on my PC with a asrock z87 pro4 mobo(maybe extreme4 can't remember).

My question is, could I maybe buy a set of two 4gb sticks that are faster? Would it run off these two sticks first?

Or should I just get one more 8gb 1600?

I would say go with what is cheaper.
Actually, I would suspect that 2 8gb would be faster than an 8gb +2 4gb sticks, because it wouldn't enable duel channel mode.
but realistically, I doubt you would ever notice any real difference between those configurations in terms of speed.

2x4GB would be a little faster than your current 1x8GB as it would be dual channel, the goal here though seems to be 16GB, best bet would be to get a 2x8GB set, then you have dual channel and the sticks are guaranteed to work together and sell off the original 8GB, next best would be to try another 8GB stick, same model if possible and see if they will play nice, if they don't, give me a shout and we can make some adjustments, no guarantee but chances are good can be made to play together
