Question about using 7v

So I have read some people say that using the 7 volt mod is bad for the PSU as it is feeding current back into the psu by combining the 12v and 5v line. I am not doing this mod but I am using my define r4 cases integrated fan controller for my 2 case fans. The controller can be set to 7v which I find optimal. How does this fan controller work? Does it do the same thing as the mod? or is it dangerous to use the 7v fan controller setting?

Solution
The r4 fan controller uses a resistor to vary voltage & has nothing in common with the 7v mod.
Saying that IMO the 7v mod is safe anyway - unless you were running dozens off fans using that mod the feedback to the PSU is absolutely minuscule.
