Question about using PC1600 DDR!

I just bought a AMD 1.2Ghz 266bus CPU and a Gigabyte GA-7DX. But due to the high prices of PC2100(266), which I can't afford the amount I want(about 500mb-1gig), I'm thinking about bying PC1600. But according to the info I've read it only runs at 200Mhz speed wise.

So will the PC1600 work with a 266mhz CPU? Or will it fry the PC1600? Or not even work at all?

You can put PC1600 in the system but the benchmarks show it performing lower than PC133. I suggest getting 128MB or 256MB of PC2100 for now and wait for prices to drop. 256MB of PC2100 will perform far better than 512MB of PC1600. But hey its your money and your system so you make the choice.

i don't have a link but this is what i can remember reading...
the ddr motherboards can't run asynchronously (sp?) like the kt133 mobo's. this means that pc1600 can only run at a 100mhz ddr fsb and pc2100 can only run at 133mhz ddr fsb (not sure if it is backwards compatabe). so the answer to your question is no, you can't run the cpu at a 266mhz fsb and use pc1600

It will work, depending on the manufacturer's tolerances. I have a 256MB DIMM of DDR from Micron/Crucial of PC-1600. I have it installed on an ASUS A7M266 with Athlon 1.13GHz/266MHz FSB. The multipler is locked at 8.5 so the only way for me (that I have found) to run the CPU at 1.13GHz is with the 133MHz bus clock, which then forces the the memory to PC-2100. I've been running like this for a month with no problems.

I am curious though if I am running the risk of physically damaging the memory. I don't think so personally. My understanding is that if its not going to work you'll have timing issues from the get go, I don't beleive you can 'wear it out'.
