Question about Western Digital My Book Live

I don't have the biggest understanding about NASs in general, but I understand that you can access your nas through PCs, android devices, and iOS devices within your network.

My question is, can you access your files outside of your network through the internet?
For example, can I access my movies that are stored in my NAS from work computer or my iPhone or my ASUS tablet?

I was planning on purchasing this model if I can.

You could access them from other places, but depending on what your home inet upload speed is doing something like watching a movie would not work at all. Very likely you don't have the upload bandwidth to stream to a pc.

hey tomatthe, thanks for the answer. Then what about from a tablet or something? and from a pc, can i transfer the files to my work pc and watch it from there?

Hi, You have a firewall between your house and the rest of the world. It's in your router, and fights off an attack every few seconds. (Sometime enable log function in your router, you can see them attack).

To access your local disk from outside your house you need to
1. Publish your IP address somewhere you can find it even when your ISP changes it. google "free dynamic dns"
2. Open a hole in your firewall to get access to your disk. This is the really risky part.
3. Use the IP address to get to your PC and then whatever protocol you want (NAS, CIFS, etc.) to serve you your data.

You don't want to do this.

Instead you want to get some free cloud storage from google or amazon or whoever and push your data up there. That device will let you access files from wherever, but it will be pulling it from your home network.

I'm not to clear on what tsnor was referring to, but

1. True for basically any access to your home machine, ie rdp access
2. The device very likely runs on 80/443 and would have that forwarded to it from his/her router. Putting your data online vs a local network clearly has risk, he/she should understand this I agree.
3. ? this does not make sense, NAS protocol?
