Hey wanna make sure I don't screw this up. Currently I live in a basement and have a router hooked up as, I think, just an access point. My main internet line is in the 1 port not the globe port. My neighbor was saying I should hook it up normally for the new one, Internet cord into the globe and then my electronics in the ports.

My question is if I just plug it in will it work? Also can I choose my own wifi password or would it be tied to my landlords wifi password? Is it possible to set a password for just my wireless router access?

Thank you it's been about 5 years since I hooked up the old one :s

From your post, I'm gathering that you're sharing the same Internet service with your landlord. Is that correct?

The problem with using the router configured as an AP is your devices will be visible to your landlord's network devices (i.e. on the same LAN). Your devices may be directly accessible if you are not careful with network sharing of services or files.

When connected as a router (using the "globe" port), your devices are effectively "hidden" behind the router's IP address using NAT. A double-NAT problem will exist in this configuration, since your landlord is also using a router. This will cause problems with some services such as VoIP, Skype, and online gaming, among others.

In either configuration, your landlord can still intercept your Internet data with the right tools, so you should be aware that this is a possibility.

To answer your questions, yes it will work if you just plug it in. In either case you can (and should) set up your own wifi ID and password.

Thank you yes I am sharing the same Internet as them. I'm not worried about them accessing the computer over lan as we have been living here for years and had no problems. I will go ahead and set it up and look up how to change my password. I'm confused what you mean that it could cause issues gaming I play WoW will this be a problem?

Only if you set it up on the global port will it cause gaming problems because of double NAT. If WoW requires your PC to have certain ports open, the ports must be forwarded through both routers. It may be difficult to get working properly if you are unsure of the forwarding process.

If you aren't worried about access issues with your landlord, then just leave it set up as you had: as an access point with cable connected to one of the LAN ports (WAN or globe port unused). This is the usual method of connecting two routers on a trusted network. You can still set up your own wifi ID and password, independent of your landlords wifi.

Ok I'll give it a shot today and see what happens. I guess I could technically set it up in the WAN port and if wow is having issues change it to the other way?

Yes, it's easy to set it up in either configuration, and most aspects of normal web browsing shouldn't be affected.
