Question concerning RAM when overclocking

Hey guys,

I'm a newbie to overclocking, but would certainly like to learn. I just read the sticky concerning duo/quad overclocking. I have a question about FSB and RAM. I will be using an e8600. I read that DDR2 800 RAM is supposed to be able to work with up to 400 Mhz FSB. If I am planning to put the FSP at 400 Mhz, should I just go to 1066 RAM (costs roughly 50% more), or will 800 suffice? Will there be any negative effects of using DDR2 800 at 400 Mhz FSB, its max? Thanks in advance!

For an e8600, I'd get 1066mhz ram. At stock speeds, 800mhz ram is good up to 4.0ghz, but most e8600's can get up to 4.5ghz.

But would running 800s at 400 FSB be detrimental to the RAM's health or anything else in some way? I may just shell out the extra cash for 1066s.

Running 800's at a 400mhz fsb would be running them at stock speeds. It's not damaging at all. If you don't want to spend the extra money on 1066's, you could get 800mhz ram that's good at overclocking. Have a look at these:

nope. if it can't meet up to it's factory specs than it should be RMA'd. false advertising! 😛 1066 is just OC'd 800 from the factory anyway, so imo just get some nice good quality 800 and ur good to go!

the only thing detrimental to the RAM's health would be eXtreme overvolting..

Actually, those mushkins are exactly the ones I am planning to get. I just wasn't sure if 800s would be safe or not. Sounds like I have nothing to worry about. Thanks, guys!

Yep, those are safe. They can easily get your e8600 to 4.5ghz.

?? why would he need the 1066?? I got the 800 running at 425.

the 1066 timings are 5-5-5-15. I would go for the 800 as they are 4-4-4-12.
You're better off with the 800.
