Wrong. The damage is not "first dealt to the Fog Bank and then anything left
over gets moved to you". [A long time ago, 1998 and before, that was the case;
it hasn't been for A While.]
The damage is divided up on _assignment_ - when the combat damage gets put ONTO
the stack. At that time, your opponent gets to divide the Firecat's damage
among its blocker(s), and can also assign some to you as long as he assigns
at least lethal damage to each blocker of it. And "lethal damage" has nothing
to do with "will any of it be prevented?", it's just "an amount greater than
or equal to its toughness, minus any damage already on it and any being
assigned at the same time". So he has to aim at least 2 at the Fog Bank, and
can aim anywhere from 2 to 7 at it; the remainder is assigned to you DIRECTLY.
(He can't aim just 1 at the Fog Bank, or none, because in that case he can't
aim any at you, and he has to aim it all SOMEWHERE legal if possible.)
Later when the combat damage goes to resolve, the Fog Bank's ability
prevents any that tries to be dealt to it. It can't and doesn't prevent any
that is trying to be dealt to YOU; you are not the Fog Bank. So usually the
outcome is "2 assigned to the Fog Bank, 5 to you; Fog Bank prevents its 2,
you are dealt 5".
