Hello All,
I rent half of a duplex. Rent includes internet in the form of a Linksys extender (Model #RE6500). The router and modem are not accessible on my side. I'd like to get a Snology DS216j NAS for storage of business documents and other files. I'd plug NAS to Extender via Cat5 cable. Hoping backups would be wireless. Speed isn't an issue as its major factor will be backups. Should there ever be a time in which I would download the backups I can connect Cat5 directly into the computer.

Would this work?

What options does the forum suggest?

Other ideas:
-Wireless switch in place of extender
-Wireless router (no internet) for NAS and extender for internet only if computers could switch automatically between the two.

Thanks for your inputs and for taking the time to respond.

First thing I would worry about is security. I doubt that the RE6500 would protect your network from the primary. I would get a router, connect it to the ethernet port of the extender and use YOUR router to protect your network. Then connect to your router, not the wireless extender. You need to treat the included internet as the hostile public internet. You don't know what the other side is doing. Protect yourself.

I have spoken to the landlord and have been given access to a giga-port from the modem. Which I'll connect to my own wireless router. Secure that with a strong password then connect the NAS to it. Thanks for your help.
