Hey there everyone, first id like to say hi, as im new here but have something im struggling to figure out so i might as well ask right? The main reason that Im thinking of upgrading is because of the gaming factor, I play World Of Warcraft and CoD2 and what not, but none of the newest graphic intensive games. It runs alright with medium/low settings on 1024/768 with no AA or AF. Ive seen alot of benchmarks with similar hardware to mine that makes me believe I have a real bottlneck hindering my performance.

Ill start with my specs.

Amd Athon XP 2600+ barton. Not overclocked yet, until i get a new mobo(maybe)

1GB of kingston pc 2700 ddr ram.

BFG tech fx5900XT OC

IBM DPTA-372730 27Gig HD-- 4.17 MS- 7200rpm

Maxtor 2B020H1 20 gig- 12MS, 5400 RPM.

A crappy Emachines 17" CRT, 85hz refresh rate at 1024/768

EliteGroup KT-600 A motherboard, socket A.

PSU- MGE(generic?) 450W PSU- 28amps @+3.3v,

Windows XP 2600 edition, not upgraded to SP2, but have major bug fixes and am behind a router with no DMZ setup.

Basically what im asking is what is the major kink in this system for games? I know that it should be running better as i just built my friend a computer with a 9800pro, and only 512 MB of ram, that benchmarked only like 5FPS off of mine on toms hardware, yet his is so much smoother and less choppy, though FPS are about the same except in crowded areas in wow.

so its just got me kinda confused, Im thinking maybe its my mobo, and was thinking of replacing with with this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813123233&ATT=13-123-233&CMP=OTC-C173T
until later next year when i can go 64 and upgrade everything.

any opinions or alternate suggestions?

Alright, well over the summer when my friend was in training for the army, i borrowed his bfg tech 6600 128mb card... and I didnt see a TON of improvement, what card would i need to go with to get this improvement? and what about the 9800pro doing oodles better than my fx... are the ati's just better at it?

** just as a note, all cards im discussing in all the pcs here are all 8xagp.

Ok sorry I made a mistake its not a 6600, its a normal, NON GT, 6800 128 mb ram. I Had to run and check. So do you still think this is the problem? So a 9800pro or an x700 would be a lot better for me you think? Ive always been a nvidia fan but im really impressed with the pc that i built with a 9800pro that can run wow at full graphics flawlessly. So let me know what you think.

Thanks for that thread it did help on honing my choices.

A 6800 is better than a 6600GT. If you didn't see any performance increase then the problem is somewhere else.
Hard to say what could cause the problem.

A 700XT is better than a 9800Pro.

And I knew your where discussing AGP-cards since you mentioned a 9800Pro, there is no 9800Pro for PCI Express. ;)

There is no noticable difference in performance between AGP and PCI Express.

Alright, well like i said, there wasnt that much of a performance increase, but i could turn a couple settings up a bit higher, but nothing extreme. Maybe i should just install my friends 9800pro in my machine tonight and see how it performs differently... should i do that then come post the results?

ok - Here is a bunch o' stuff to try (if you haven't already) and consider:

Age of your windows install - If your windows installation is 'old' (more than 6 months) and you've never 'cleaned' it with something like norton windoctor, then the registry is probably a mess and that can seriously impact your gaming performance (this is taken from personal experience). Without a tool like norton windoctor (or equivalent) the only way to 'clean' your windows install is to do a wipe and fresh install (a pain I know, but you would not believe the improvement in performance on a fresh windows install). Also remember that THG benchmarks are all done immediately after clean windows installs with little other software besides the benchmark utilities and games.

The card is not the issue if you've already swapped it with a 6800 and saw little difference. 5900XT to 6800 should be noticeable performance improvement.

Drivers - be sure you are running the latest nVidia detonators - can make a big difference. Even with an older 5900 series, nVidia's unified driver architecture has made improvements even for older cards. If you're not running the latest - get them. Once you have them go to the control panel for the display and look at the settings and be sure they're dialed in right for the card.

Hard drive - when was the last time you defragged? Awhile ago I upgraded from a Geforce 3 TI 200 to a Geforce 4 Ti 4400 and saw little improvement in framerate - I poked around and found a badly fragmented HDD - so I defragged (use norton speedisk if you can - it defrags the swap file while windows defrag doesnt) and it trippled my framerate in unreal tournament 2004.

Hard drive (continued) - Look at how 'full' your HDD is (how much free space). I ran into a situation with a customer's computer where they wondered why winXP took 15 minutes to boot (no kidding) and they had 300 MB free on a 60 GB hdd. If your disks are too full that can kill performance. - I also hope you are running the 7200RPM drive as your main/OS drive.

Swap File - If you don't already have it set up this way, you should have the windows swap file on your second physical HDD, and not on the same drive as windows XP. This can improve performance, just be sure to keep it defragmented at all times.

Memory - When I swapped from DDR333 to DDR400 I also noticed a marked performance improvement (because my memory was no longer asynchronous with the FSB) I noticed DDR333 (PC 2700) on a Barton core AthlonXP (400mhz FSB). That could be hampering the performance since the memory and FSB are not operating at a synchronous clock speed. Also, check the BIOS and be sure that your Barton core CPU is running at a FSB speed of 200mhz (400 effective). If your BIOS has the CPU capped at 166Mhz (333 effecitve) then your XP 2600+ isn't really running as fast as it could. That will be a function of your motherboard's capabilities.

Well, that's all I can think of offhand. I've tweaked and tinkered with many a configuration to eek additional framerate, and this is the bulk of what I've found is effective outside of a wholesale hardware upgrade.

Cheers

im just gonna put in my 2 cents... i havnt read all the posts yet so if some1 said it jsut call me an idiot... but my guess is ur harddrives... then 2nd guess is the memory even though fx are bad at dx9 its still better than my 9600pro and i run on medium/high in wow with lil lag outside of IF... but my entire system is faster with the acception of the card... my advise is try buying a new hd and see if that helps at all... the 5400 rpm is scaring me... i had a 2400 with a 9200 pro and 512 mb and ran wow at low/med with no lag so u should be at least close to maxing out graphics... my opinion of course :p... also with the mobo upgrade, if u have enough patience try ur best to save up some $$ and just buy a new system... preferably pci-e.. i just upgraded to amd3700... agp for 220 bux with mobo, u could prob get the same deal if u look around... that way u can recycle the 5900 and upgrade in a few more years since the 5900 is still a decent card...

ya cus with like medium settings at 1024/768 with no AA or AF and all shader effects on I can dip down as low as under 10 FPS in ironforge on a high pop server. Anyone able to tell me an answer for sure?

There will be no simple 'for sure' answer - refer to my previous post for things to start looking at. When tweaking a gaming rig, there's no single 'switch' to get the best performance out of what you have. Your problem could be any of the issues I've detailed above.

alright well let me cover them all for you one by one to give you a better idea.

1- The windows xp installation is no more than 2 weeks old. Just did this.

2- Definitely the latest nvidia drivers.

3- I defragged with the windows tool about a week and a half ago, but not with speedisk, if you think its that much different I could give it a try.

4- Got tons of free space, in excess of like 10+ gigs on both.

5- I just changed the swap file to the D drive though its a bit slower at 5400RPM i think it will still work better on the second drive if im correct.

6- The memory thing, im not sure about, I would have to find someone with some ram that i could test so i dont know about this one... would this be a huge bottleneck?

so the memory is basically the only thing that I am not able to test atm... everything else checked out fine..

Alright, So i tried my 512 stick of pc 400 ram from a friends computer, i put that in and it ran the same exact way as it was before, so no change there.

Something strange when I went into the Bios though, I couldnt change the FSB setting, there was no option, and believe me i looked everywhere, couldnt change hte dram frequency, dram timing was on auto, and if i changed the cpu clock from 166, it just wouldnt boot back up, so i had to reset and run it with default settings.

Though the wierd thing is that it recognized my CPU as a 2600+, but the settings werent correct and couldnt be changed... so now im thinking its my shaky MObo even more.

Anyone else?

Something to look at this closer might be do download and run CPUz that should tell you what FSB and such that the CPU is actually using.

It's only information about your system. I didn't find anything strange. What games are you playing anyway? CoD2 is pretty demanding so you know it. I don't think there is something wrong with your system.

alright, well Cod2 actually runs the best out of all the games, with solid 40+ framerates at 1024-768 medium, its just a really well written game.

That being said, i just think i should be getting better performance but maybe im wrong. I know that my mobo is running in 166 FSB when it could be higher, along with my memory.

Heres my thinking, new mobo with nforce2 bios, which is great for overclocking my barton, and maybe a 6600gt?

Would it be worth it to also upgrade my ddr333 to ddr400 to make it synchrinous with my Barton chip FSB? Or would that not make a big impact?

This is pretty much the last question I have, if you guys think its worth upgrading those components to get some more life out of a decent system.

Your CPU has a FSB of 166MHz (333MHz effective) so there is nothing wrong with that. But the motherboard is capable of running the RAM in 200MHz (DDR400). Your current memory is capable of running DDR400 as I can see. The only thing is that you have to set it manually in the BIOS.

But that will not make any notable difference to your gaming performance. I don't think the upgrades to a nforce2-motherboard is worth the money. I would put everything on a graphics card. That will get most gaming performance for your money.

Alright, well actually I have the AMD barton chip, which has a FSB of 200mhz(400 effective) and I only have pc2700 memory right now which is limited to 333 effective.

But as long as you got that down, I think i will just get a new graphics card, I guess my fx5900xt is just getting too old :( lol.

Would a 6600gt suffice for alot of newer dx9 shader games like fear etc? Or would a 6800 be worth it?

According to the info your RAM is PC2700 (DDR333) CL2.5 that means it can be run at DDR400 CL3.

The 2600+ Barton doesn't have a 200MHz FSB, it has a 166MHz FSB. Only the faster Bartons has FSB 400MHz.

FEAR is really demanding for your system. A 6600GT or a 6800 will improve the performance so you can run it at the lower settings. For anything higher you will need a new system.

alright then, I guess oome of stuff i read was incorrect. So Basically I think im gonna get the new mobo, that supporst overclocking, OC my memory and processor a bit, then get a 6600GT probably

Wow, I'm late to the game. :)

I have an AMD Athlon XP2600+ Barton core. It runs at 166fsb stock. Perfectly in synch with your PC2700 RAM. I think the Barton is the first XP core that could do 200fsb (stock), but only the 3200+ model (and I think a special OEM 3000+ but I could be wrong) came that way. All the other Bartons (2600+, 2800+, etc.) run at 166.

If your mobo allows you to change the FSB, try that - I have mine running at 191fsb (on the 200mhz or '/6' divider) totally stable for almost 2 yrs so far. My mobo is a Soyo SY-KT600 Dragon Plus v1.0 and it won't let me change core voltage at all (I could do a wire mod, but I'm too lazy), and it runs my core at 1.61v instead of 1.65v per spec.

Like the others I think your video card is the culprit here - but I'm not sure a 6600gt is going to be a big upgrade. The 6600gt is just a tad faster than a 9800Pro, and even though the 5xxx series stunk, the 5900 was the counterpart to the 9800 (even though it was slower...) so you're doing more of an incremental upgrade than a big jump.

Also make sure you completely uninstall the old video drivers and use something like driver cleaner to make sure they're gone before installing the new card. Especially do this if you're changing between ATI & nVidia, but its not a bad idea to do when changing generations of cards even within nVidia (5900 to 6600).

Mike.

Ya. Ive been reading alot of reviews and thinking, and I guess I never realized but my card is like 2+ generations old, SO i guess it is the problem. I am also upgrading to a much more Oc able mobo and im gonna get the ati x700 pro. My friend had a similar setup to me and got that and said his games are so much better. Its on sale at a local store for 160, so im thinking im gonna do that within the next month. I will let you know how it all goes though.
