Question of Perception

7 is (more or less) out now, and I was thinking about how Perception has played into recent OS history.

Any thoughts on whether saying that Windows 7's Kernel is based on Server 2008?? Or Vista?

Curious to see/hear what everyone thinks.

<and Yes, I know it's two ways of describing the exact same thing...>

Windows 7 IS out, BETA, less not more. Based on Vista, XP, 2000, and NT...perception is it's Vista's version of Win Me, an extension of an OS that SUCKED to begin with...

I understand 7 is out - I have the official bits running now, thank you. Courtesy of Technet.

I've also been running Vista 64 for the last two years, and have been around long enough to remember Win 3.1. So spare me the Win ME comparison, since I've also used *that* OS. And if you think Vista is really that bad, you clearly haven't dealt with a pre SP1 XP installation - *that* was bad...

I also understand very well that it's the same kernel on Server 2008 and Vista.

Server 2008 has been very very well received. And So far the press on 7 has been rather positive, with the unsurprising exception of the usual peeps who love screaming at MSFT anyways....

What I wanted to know was people's thoughts on the Server contribution - Since it's all the same Kernel, why the change in tone?

And if you think Vista is really that bad, you clearly haven't dealt with a pre SP1 XP installation - *that* was bad...

I bought XP from day one. I never had any issues with it. I dual booted with 98SE for a month, until I got used to it - then it was XP (Pro) all the way for me - for the record, XP was gold day one. All I recall is SP1 caused some people driver issues (like all SP's do). SP1 in XP gave us usb 2.0.

Because the people who use WinServ are smart enough to know how to use an OS. The people who just use Vista don't know their ass from a hole in the ground most of the time, so they just ride the wave of bad press. They read one article title by someone who has a complaint, and away they go.

WinServ '08 is on my desktop as main, Win7 beta just replaced Vista on my laptop (read: beta station). I too remember Win3.1 :kaola:

I've said it before and I will say it again, Me can not be classified as an OS because it was rarely operating. Anyone who puts Vista in the same boat as Me never used Me, but is jumping on the bandwagon because they think it's cool.

Win Server 2008 just seemed alot like Vista to me, but I'm not one for bothering to tweak my OS alot. Sound had issues too, and yes I did enable the Windows Audio service 😉

I work with this person who is largely ignorant about PC hardware. He said he hates Vista and it's completely crap. He said he tried the Beta version of Windows 7 and said it's the most amazing OS ever. Windows 7 is based off of Windows Vista, just new and improved so it sounds. Sounds like rebranding and improving can make people change their minds.

Aside from home groups. it's hard to see any influence windows server 2008 may have had on windows 7. Personally I wish MS would make a OS devoid of all of the advanced network and permissions options. Something that would be a TRUE home OS.

I've used vista since day 1 and haven't had any major issues with it. My XP key now resides in a virtual machine within vista.

Odd that Me still gets bad press . I used it for nearly 5 years and it was a brilliant stable OS compared to anything that had gone before .
Really they should have called it Windows 98 SP3.

Yes there were limits , but they were always there in the previous DOS based systems as well .
And the huge bonuses of using Me . One was watching XP be smashed by worms that didnt affect a DOS system , a second was the ability to boot in to DOS and clean a system if you ever did get spyware or viral infections .

In the meantime Windows 7 is a Vista kernel and thats fine since vistas problems have nothing to do with the kernel and lots to do with the UAC , HDCP and bloating .
With vista MS forgot that people have to like using their computers and for that to happen the computer must get on with the job ,not spend half its time deciding if the user is a dickhead or a pirate

I had to reformat every few months just so that I could shut it down. It would perpetually hit me with "Close Program" dialog boxes with no named program, and I had to just hit the power button. Other times it would go to a black screen with a single flashing bar which just stayed there. Then there were the crashes....

Of course, it did have removeable storage support by default, which was nice.

There are a couple of things I know of that always caused me problems in Me . The first is trying to use more than 512mb of RAM . Thats a sure fire way to guarantee system instability . Me is so light on resources it isnt an issue , and back in 1999/2000 it was rare to find hardware that could handle much more RAM anyway .

The second thing was windows media player . NEVER update the media player version . MS made a complete hash of patching it . Use firewall access controls to stop that POS from ever connecting , and use an alternate player .

I did it myself. It was an 800MHz chip, and I assume an 8x multi since it was a 100MHz FSB. It could play CoD2 (very slowly mind you) at 1GHz but failed prime95 within minutes. In fact, I played CoD2 through the whole way for the first time with that chip.

Yes, yes, and yes. I got a Dell for my 10th birthday running XP in 2002, and we didn't get broadband until 2005, so the internet was pretty much useless to me (as were Windows updates and antivirus). I used XP pre-SP1 for 3 years, and it was not a fun experience. XP with SP2 or later is pretty darn good, though, as is Vista SP1 (and Windows 7 beta for that matter).

I have been working with computers since the Dos 4 days. It has changed alot. While I know this is a Windows 7 forum, I have to say I had very few issues with the "dreaded Win ME" outside of me screwing around like I normally do. I like to see if I can break things and fix them without reinstalling.

As far as Win7, I haven't used it much yet. I had issues with my sound card. I put Vista back for now. I plan to look into it again when RC1 comes out. This was also the time I was having major issues with my PC not running for more than 10 mins before it locked up. I have a couple threads in the NEW Builds section above. I think I finally got that resolved.
