If you run into trouble I am working on a custom Linux CD that will automate the process of basic data recovery. The beauty of it is that it requires zero Linux knowledge.
The way it works is you boot the CD and it automatically identifies all the partitions on your system and mounts each partition read-only. It then creates network shares for each partition. You are then able to access the shares from another Windows PC on your local network and copy your data.
