Hi - just bought a couple of 'lucky dip' packs of cards - they arrived thru
the post no problem, but the previous owner must have been a smoker - they
reek!

Does anyone have suggestions about how to (at least) clear the smoke smell
from the cards?

From the Collected Witterings of Nick Elder, volume 23:

Doesn't follow that it was the owner who smoked. Maybe he played in pubs a
lot.

Spray them with alcohol-free deodorant and leave them on the window sill
overnight (with the window open, of course).

In the past, when I've gotten books in such a state (reeking of tobacco smoke),
I've had good luck placing the open book (covered in tissue) in a box w/ baking
soda (repeating w/ the book opened to different sections every day or so until
the smell is gone) --- for cards, I'd layer baking soda, then tissue, then
cards, then more tissue and baking soda on that --- flip after a day, probably
will be okay the next.
