question re: using a fax machine/all in one on home phone line

this is for my not tech savvy mother-in-law. She is wants a fax machine for her house, but not a second phone line. I thought I had heard that some/all? fax machines would be able to somehow recognize if the incoming call is fax or phone and pick up if necessary.

Anyone know if there is a way to do this? if so, how? what should I (bc i'll have to do all the work) look for?

any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Does she have internet? If so, would E-Fax or similar be OK? She could get her faxes as e-mail and print them.

If she can get her e-mail then you can setup all the e-fax stuff for her. It is just another e-mail message. Then she just has to print it if she wants hardcopy. You can get a free e-fax "phone number" to play with ...
