[SOLVED] Question regarding 2700x and ram speeds

I’m running a 2700x in a ASUS Strix b450 itx board.

I just bought a set of Ballistix elite 3600/16 2x8 gb

question:

I bought this memory as there is a lot of success stories regarding its ability to overclock speeds.

can I take advantage of higher speeds then 3600mhz on my 2700x or no? I’ve seen results that 3466/16 is a good jump over 3200/16 but beyond that I’m not sure.

the Ballistix sport 3200/16 also supposedly overclocks well so I’m debating if it’s worth it to save 50$ and get the sport model and just get it up to 3466/16 or 3466/15.

Maybe. I've seen issues with 3200/16 kits with 2nd Gen... others have seen them work just fine. I find it to be a bit of a crapshoot, honestly.

In terms of OCing further, You'll probably find better results shooting for tighter timings (3000-3200MHz @ CL15) vs higher speeds at 16, unless you can get it stable at 3600/16.... which is pretty unlikely IMO.

Think I’ll try it when it gets here, I was hoping that I could keep the 3600 and tighten it up a tad considering these sticks apparently overclock well.

if not I may return them and take a gamble on the sport 3200/16 version instead and see if they have headroom or can be tightened.

my end goal if I can get ideally would be 3200/14 or 3466/15 or better if possible ofc.

It's going to depend on the workload - and some of it can even come down to the specific motherboard & it's preconfigured settings.

For example, take a look at the 4000MHz/CL19 HyperX kit in a lot of the charts. Specifically in GTAV.
On the Gigabyte board, the kit is bettered by 3000MHz/CL15, yet on MSI, it improves ~3%, with nothing else changed.

At a high level, you should be shooting for >3200MHz and the lowest CL possible. IF you could achieve 3600MHz @ CL15, I think that would be your ideal.... but I wouldn't hold my breath that those numbers would be achievable.

I’m definitely gonna shoot for the lowest CL possible.
I have some trident Z 3200/16 and XPG Gammix 3200/16 here as well I can use for some comparisons.
