Question regarding GTX 1080 on an old motherboard

Hello. I have a quite old CPU build (from 2012, basically) with an i7 3820k, a GTX 680, 8GB RAM, and a Rampage IV Formula as the motherboard. So, in February of next year I will have the chance to get a new gpu and my question is - is getting the GTX 1080 even worth it at this point? I mean, the processor does run at 3.6 ghz so I'm in doubt whether I will bottleneck the card or something alike. I know for sure I will change my cooling system because it's quite outdated but my main question is if changing anything else, such as the motherboard, is necessary at all? Sorry to bother you all with a quite silly question.

You have a high end Asus board of the era, and should be able to OC that i7.

For extra OOMPH, you could get an old 3930k with 6 cores, and overclock it some more. Your system is far from being outdated, and does not need much updating. The CPU would be more of a sidestep though, as that 4 core/8 thread 3820k is still enough for what you have and will not bottleneck the 1080 much at all.

really if you game at resolutions higher than 1080p, the CPU isn't as serious of a factor anyhow. and at 1080p it's not exactly going to be struggling.

I didn't take into account what resolution OP would be at, as it wasn't mentioned. But if it is 1080p, you raise a valid point.

Well, I do game at 1080p nowadays but since I'm getting a better gpu, then 4K is definitely a possibility. Should I still get a gtx 1080 trusting that an overclock on my current processor is going to do the job in 4k?

basically the higher you scale the resolution, the harder the GPU has to work, it gets to a point where CPU speed is not at all important because the bottleneck becomes the GPU once more.

But I would OC that CPU anyhow, it's free performance and it WILL help feed the 1080 and assist with raising those minimum frame rates in cases where you are CPU bottlenecked.

If you plan to go 4k, then yes. As I mentioned above, you have a relatively cheap upgrade path CPU wise if it proves to be an issue.
