Question regarding hard drive longevity

Hello!

I have a question.

My husband bought a new 500gb hard drive (HDD) for our xbox 360. He got the xbox to read it successfully but had trouble restoring all the installed games.

He ended up "restoring" all the games 3 times before it would work. (the disc installed games had to be reinstalled from the game discs again).

This was a new 500gb drive and it has had about 450GB written to it in the past 2 days.

Does anyone have a good opinion of just how much this would have worn out the drive?

Should we consider buying a new drive?

Is the average drive tough enough to take this much abuse and keep ticking for years to come?

We were hoping this drive would last the life of the 360.

Any insight is much appreciated.

the drive will be fine. and barring handling errors in transit it should easily last the life of the console.
even if you were to transfer 50+ gig a day every day for the next year it would be fine.

Last metric I heard was that consumer hard disks are good for about 5% duty cycle over approximately a 5 year expected lifespan. A little, one-time intensive usage is unlikely to throw the averages off by much. I wouldn't worry about your hard drive dying prematurely.
