Question Question regarding HBA card

I have a PCIe slot (electric x4 and physical x16). I plan to put an HBA SAS PCIe Gen 2.0 external card on it for my Plex server. The external JBOD that I have has a total of 8 disks connected using a SAS Expander. I want to know if it will matter if I use a single port, dual port, or 4 port external card if I just use one port. The reason I am asking is that I have a 4 port card lying around but I am not sure how these cards work means is bandwidth on these cards equally divided into different ports irrespective of ports being used or does it only get divided among the total HDDs connected?
Please clarify my doubt.

It's going to come down to the way the card you have happens to be designed. Typically bandwidth is only allocated to something using it so using a 4 port card with only one active should be fine.
