Question regarding plan and access to towers

Good morning. My wife has the Cingular nation plan and I have the old
prefered nation plan which I got about a year and a half ago. WE both use
motorola v400's and in my home area am seeing the following results. Her
signal is fairly solid and the audio doesn't break up much. My signal tends
to break up more as if I am being sent to a more distant tower. Does the
type of plan make any difference regarding what towers cingular let's you
access? I am in the ny/nj area specificly rockaway nj and I believe we are
using tmobile towers here. Also, is it possible that one phone picks up
signal better then the other and if so is there any way to remedy this?
Thsanks.

Yes it is very possible. The phones are manufactured to exacting standards, but
the way people treat them can be vastly different and the differences in
treatment can affect the phone's ability to perform.

How many times have you dropped your phone compared to your wife's number of
drops. Has your phone laid in the dash of your car for extended periods in the
heat, hers only in her purse? etc......

The above are examples but I doubt that you and her handle your phones exactly
the same.

John, thanks for your reply. Actually, right now both phones are brand new
and haven't had the pleasure of being subjected to much abuse yet. Here's
one thing I did and believe it or not it seems to have helped. I was on one
of the older prefered nation promotions which was rather nice. 1050 anytime
minutes and 5000 n/w for $60.00 and this was with the gait phone added. When
I spoke to the cingular rep he stated that what might be happening is since
the system has my esn number even though my sim was in a gsm phone there
might be conflicts regarding which tower I would be handed off to. The
possibillity existed that the system would be trying to find a tdma tower if
the gsm signal was week and since I was using a gsm phone and not the gait
phone which is what I do when I am in my home area, I might be handed off
differently. I asked the rep to deactivate the esn and take the gait phone
off the account. Well, I rebooted the phone 2 times and got the little
welcome cingular message and I do notice a les fragmented signal. Now, when
he suggested this I laughed because I figured that since the card was in the
gsm phone it would know what to do. Hmmm, i guess if it works right? Have
you heard of this at all? Thanks again.
