Question regarding SSD's.

So I'm considering getting an SSD sometime before next year so I can use it as my boot drive and have my operating system on it and other certain programs such a chrome. My question is, is there any possible way to transfer just my operating system to the SSD without having to reinstall the whole thing or do I have to wipe out my current HDD and start from the beginning? I wanna be able to use it for that, but at the same time I don't wanna have to go through the process of redownloading everything or using and external HDD to hold my files and transfer them back afterwards.

You can transfer/migrate just your OS as long as it's on a separate partition. However after you've done everything you need so that you can run your computer with the new SSD, it's recommended that you wipe the old HDD if you want to use it as a secondary storage drive.
