Using (1x32gb) stick in single chanel mode, can I use a (1x8gb) stick in another dimm slot, to get a total of 40gb ?

I 've upgraded to the 32gb stick, and have the old 8gb stick left over.

I will advise against mixing and matching sticks of ram to get a cumulative number on paper. In fact, invest in a dual channel ram kit. What is the make and model of your motherboard? Processor used? Build is for gaming?
