Questioning the worth of PC gaming

I have been thinking for months on end about PC gaming and it's worth, here's what you need to know:

I have been gaming a long time and I game a lot, I am a console gamer (xbox 360 predominantly) (I don't have a PC but I've been educating myself on all the parts) and my friend has a gaming PC with an intel core i5 4690 and a nvidia gtx 660. He has an SSD and the computer is really fast I've noticed. But I'm planning to get a gtx 960 and I've heard that the 660 is slightly more powerful than the PS4's GPU which is really disappointing considering that thing costs well over $100 whereas buying a PS4 with all neccessary parts including GPU is only $500, that's really cheap for what the specs offer.

My build comes to a total of $2000, now for starters don't give me that BS how you can build a $500 gaming rig that outperforms the consoles because that simply isn't true. Now what I'm thinking now is: is it worth it to drop in $2000 for a gaming rig that's not 4 times more powerful than the xbox one or PS4 when I could just buy them for the cheap $500?

Unless there's something I'm missing out on here, PC gaming just doesn't seem like a wise investment and I really question whether or not it is worth my time and money to join the PC master race community.

A $2000 rig FAR surpasses any console of any kind, plain and simple. You could build a MASSIVE beast of a rig with $2000. I built mine for $1300 back in 2011 and it's STILL better than consoles, if you're THAT serious about it. When you boil it down, the graphics and playability WILL be better in the end because the hardware is just THAT much better than consoles. It's been proven time and time again, generation after generation, so if you spend $2000 on a sweet rig, you'll future proof yourself for the next 10 years if you ask me.

Come join the PC master race and get away from the silly console peasants. YOU ALSO GET SICK DEALS ON FULL, LEGAL GAMES from sites like Cdkeys.com, G2A.com, greenmangaming, etc etc. It's a no brainer and STEAM runs deals all the time. You can also play with a keyboard and mouse OR hook up your Xbox 360 controller and have the same feel as a console BUT better performance and graphics at the end of the day. Period.

u ain t gonna future proof yourself for 10+ years. We don t know what s in 2 years, things can change fast or go slow, all we can do is wait and see...
G2A and co had in the past problems with selling keys which got purchased with stolen credit cards, so u are nowhere near safe if u buy from them, there is always a risk.
Also he talks about NZ Dollar and building with a 960. To my knowledge NZ have much higher prices for PC hardware than US or EU.
BradNeil2 what s the exact build u looking at?
So a 960 is a decent card but u ain t gonna run GTA5 and Co in max settings.
I have a feeling for him it s maybe really the best to get a 500bucks PS4 if he doesn t really want a PC or needs one...

bembene, this is the hardware for everything im getting:

Important stuff:

Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card

Not important stuff:

NZXT Phantom 410 (Red) ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair RM 450W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)
TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
AOC E2460SD 60Hz 24.0" Monitor

Do you think I could get gta 5 to run at max with no anti-aliasing? I'm not a huge fan of anti aliasing because of the resource draw, but the 960 I might get is 4GB of vram so it's more than your standard 960

hey Bradneil2,

look at this benchmark: http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/1905-gta-v-pc-fps-benchmark-graphics-cards
I guess u can get to 60fps most of the time with a 960 with no AA and no advanced graphic settings. But I wouldn t put my hand in fire for this.
U plan on only buying an SSD? No HDD? If not u could ditch the ssd for now and put the saved money in a gtx 970. The jump from 960 - 970 is quiet big and later it s always easy to add an ssd...
I m not sure if a 960 with 4GB is worth it, 2GB is for it s power enough. The 960 isn t really strong enough to fill the 4GB, it s more a marketing thing.

The MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB is well worth it. I just purchased one last month from Newegg.com and got a free digital copy of The Witcher 3. As previously stated, it'd be a waste of money in the long run for a 960 with 4GB. Don't do that if you're going to spent that kind of money on a serious build.

I feel like the 4GB vram is very important, I like games like skyrim and I really want to chuck on some ENB mods that make the graphics absolutely amazing, 1080p of course otherwise I risk frame rate drops, but I feel that I can't acheive that kind of thing with just a 2GB card.

Similar to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQq6x8iyTnY

But without all the 4K mods obviously.

A 970 costs too much money and goes out of my budget range, and the 960 4GB is $100 cheaper.

why not go for a amd 280x than? it has 3gb Vram and beats the 960 in every benchmark. it costs the same.

Because it's AMD that card is slow and draws way too much power, a 960 is better in eveyr single way, unless there's a benchmark you can show me that proves otherwise.
