when measuring the temperature of your CPU do you look for the temperature of your cpu itself? or the avrage temperature of the cores?

I'm not asking for programs to measure the temperature i want to know how to use the information, here's the thing; i'm allready using a software program like this and it showing alot of temperatures, And it generaly looks something like this;
CPU: 42C
Core 1: 66C
Core 2: 65C
Core 3: 65C
And i'm wondering which of these i should look at.

well it depends. looking at the temp numbers is the most usual process :)
and something is fishy, your CPU 0 is 42*C (is that CPU 0 or average? i think its 0 coz u should have 4 cores unless you are on PII X3) . i suggest you use a different software to double check. also feel the exhaust air and the backplate to judge if its actually feels that hot.

assuming the higher number is the correct temp:
if its idle temp, then it is on the high side.
if its load temp, than its fine.
if you placed your laptop on a pillow (im sure you didnot), than its fine too :)

if its a old laptop and idle temp, i would suggest opening the back plate and heat sinks to clean. you can find tutorial in youtube. you need screwdriver and thermal paste.
