Questions about Quad SLI GTX 590's

Hey guys, I have some money with no use for, so I'm thinking about buying two GTX 590.

What do you guys think about this following system:

After taxes, shipping it comes to $2850 (In Canadian dollars)


Will the processor bottleneck the videocards? (I'm thinking about overclocking it to ~4.7ghz)
Is that PSU good enough? It has a 5 egg average rating on Newegg.

What would you change? I don't want to go over $3000 and keep it in mind that I'm going to get a case ($120), dvd burner ($30) and an hyper 212 evo ($40)

No that CPU will likely not bottleneck those graphics cards in any noticeable way.

Mind you more is better in terms of CPU power/speed.

You're way better off with 3x580s.

I think twin 590's is about the best way to waste $1500 The 590 and 6990 are absolute dogs when paired. Adding a 2nd 590 gets you measly 11% increase in fps over a single 590 .... 881 to 982

Overall comment ..... a bit unbalanced .... mix of the most expensive things in some categories with the lowest budget things in other categories

MoBo - 6 PCI-E slots and only 1 does x 16 ? With lesser cards, x8 won't be as limiting but with a 590 I'd want at least 2 x 16. Also a board with just 3 is likely to give ya some fit issues regarding cooler mountings.

GFX:

Three 580's get ya 1030 fps for $1500
Two 590s get ya 982 fps for $1500
Two 580s get ya 953 (97%) fps for $1000 (67%)
Two 570s get ya 873 (89%) fps for $680 (45%)
Two 560 Ti's (900Mhz) get ya 862 (88%) fps for $430 (29%)

At 1920 x 1200, there's no game that can overtax the twin 560 Ti's....and those can be OC'd to well over 1000Mhz.... I can make absolutely no case however for anything past two 580's at that resolution.

CPU - the 2600k is great if ya can use the HT for something like video editing or whatever, but again it's can be hard to justify the extra $100 for just 0.1 MHz in gaming.

Cooler - Te hyper 212 is a great budget cooler....perfect for an entry level system.....but at $2.5k, I'd be doing the Thermalright Silver Arrow or at least the Hyper 612 PWM or Scythe Mugen 3

PSU's - HX850 and CP-850 (for the Antec cases only) both get 10.0 jonnyguru performance ratings and are good up to twin 570's.....AX 1200, also10.0 rated, is good for 2 or 3 580's.

The XFX Core Edition 850 is good for a 9.5 rating and is only $100

Running 2 HD 6990s or GTX 590s in CF/SLI is a pain unless you have a custom water cooling, HD 6990 & the GTX 590 sometime fails in some benchmarks due to overheating and noise issue, so 2 of them would like be a Vacuum machine.

Actually, a third or fourth card in SLI/CF doesn't add much value. I Would stick with 2-way CF/SLI and the GTX 580s sounds to be a good idea unless you want to wait few days and get the HD 7970 wich is right na the fastest single GPU with the same price of GTX 580.

I would look into a more quality and branded PSU such as NZXT, Corsair, Cooler Master ...and in this case you'd require 900-1000W PSU.

Wait a few days for the 7970 to be released - Crossfire them and blow every single game out of the water at Ultra settings, Max AA and AF @ 5670x1080 - that 3gb Memory buffer is DEFINATLY made for eyefinity, and the sheer power of the cards are unreal. If I were to justify spending $1000+ on any 2 cards it would be them. The performance of 2 of them will be stronger than that of 2 6990s in quadfire or 2 590s in Quad SLI I beleive, looking at the numbers Jack posted (If 2 580s give 97% of the perf of 2 590s, then 2 7970 should give you ~120%)

Yea, that way you can experience micro-stutter and a slight input lag even at 100+ fps. Go AMD!
