Questions about upgrading RAM

My questions concerning memory are:

If I were to purchase 2×8GB sticks of RAM in an LGA1155 socket board; that supports dual channel memory, could I simply install this 2×8GB kit and say in the future, buy another identical kit and also install that to have an overall 4×8GB kit.

And would this be equivalent to just buying a 4×8GB kit?

Real life scenario:
Are 2×CMY16GX3M2A1866C9 equal to 1×CMY32GX3M4A1866C9?

You can yes.
Functionally it would be the same. RAM kits are tested to make sure that all the sticks work on the same level as each other to prevent instability and to get the best possible performance. Mixing kits even of the same model isn't guaranteed to work perfectly, while a larger initial kit is.
However in my experience, I haven't had issue doing it. In all likelihood you'l be fine.
