Hi guys,
I'm looking to purchase my 1st ever KVM switch and after some extensive research I'm still a little confused on exactly what type of switch I need for my requirements. So I'm hoping the community can guide me based on my requirements below:
- 3 monitors in my setup (1 will connect via DP and the other 2 will connect via HDMI)
- My primary monitor for gaming is 4k and I need a switch that can support at least 120Hz @ 4k (ideally 144Hz if possible)
- Both work setup and gaming setup run Windows 10
- I currently use a Dell DisplayLink 3100 (link) for my work setup
- My Dell work laptop only has a single DHMI port (no DisplayPort). The docking station does have a single DisplayPort outlet
Questions:
1) I don't want to have to re-configure or change display settings when I switch. I've read that for this you need a switch with EDID technology? Is that true? Otherwise you have to change resolution settings etc each time you switch?
2) I'm looking at triple monitor switches (which are very expensive) which support 3 DP monitors (if necessary) but do I need this if 2 of my monitors will connect via HDMI?
3) I've read that even current top KVM switches can have power issues when powering premium modern-day gaming peripherals (which I'd be using in this setup). Is that true?
4) A lot of the triple monitor switches I'm looking at state something like "This DP Triple monitor KVM switch requires 3 DP outputs for each computer" but I can't get my head around that. So each computer needs to run 3 DP ports into the switch?
Appreciate any and all guidance here guys. I'm brand new to this technology and whilst I'm happy to go for an expensive switch if necessary, I want to make sure it's going to tick all the boxes.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Luke
