Questions for Viewsonic VP191b owners

Dear community,

I'm living in the UK and am interested in purchasing a VP191b LCD. But I really need to know if ClearMotiv is displayed on the packaging.

This is because I had to return a 19" Viewsonic 191b because it was very ghosty and blurry. The packaging said 8ms, HOWEVER there was NO sign of "ClearMotiv" on the packaging.

This led me to believe it's possibly not the correct Overdrive model.

Please read out the specifications on the packaging you recieved from Viewsonic if you own a 191b. I would really appreciate this. If you don't have the packaging, can you otherwise confirm this?

I played an FPS with it before I sent it back, and it was *incredibly* blurry. The mouse pointer also left a huge trail behind it. This is why I am investigating if I actually did have an Overdrive model or not (I have since returned it).

It did not mention overdrive/MVP or ClearMotiv on the box so I am wary...

The LCD I sent back clearly wasn't good enough for gaming. It had 8ms on the box, but no sign of ClearMotiv or MVP.

I don't remember if it was listed on the box or not but I don't have any glare if thats what the Clearmotiv thing your asking about. I'll look for the manual or any paperwork but don't recall seeing anything. I had some ghosting and the color seemed alot darker at the top of the screen for the first couple of days but that has cleaned up nicely. I've played BF2 with no problems but remember some ghosting with SHIII when I first got the monitor. I'll boot it up again and see if it still exist.

Anyway I thought ghosting was inexistent in this panel.

I saw one pic of the box in the internet, but I can't find it now. I only remember that it had the 8ms logo. I should receive mine next week, and I'll tell you something.

Where you using it at 1280x1024 native resolution?

But the old model also has clearmotiv. I saw on a shop technical specifications and it said:
"ClearMotiv™ Technology - Super-fast 25ms video response enables broadcast-quality full motion video at 40 FPS."

Hi, this is what you do to make sure.

The new 8ms screens can be identified via the following example:

Sample serial number: A1W050420001
The 05 refers to the year, 04 refers to the week this screen was produced.
Anything newer than 2005 week 4, will be 8ms; anything older will be 16ms.

Finally I've received today the VP191b. Mine says May 2005.

Its still in the box. I'll test it later this day. But I've taken some photos of the box.
The box doesn't mention Clearmotiv, and the 8ms symbol its just a sticker/tag that has glued to the box.
So I suppose it's the same box as the old model, and they just put a sticker on it.

The only thing I noticed right now is that the monitor is heavier than I thought it would be.

When I test it with return to castle wolfenstein, doom3, and ghost test side by side with the 19" CRT I'll post here.

Ok, I've tested all except high resolution video. I'll try to make just a short review of the things I find most significant. Unfortunatly mine has two dead subpixels, that are blue on white background, and black with a red background. All the test were made with the VP191 8ms connected to a Radeon 9800 Pro thru DVI at 75Hz.

It has ghosting. That is perfectly seen in the ghosting test. http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/ghosting_test.html

In doom3 at 60fps I don't noticed it. In Wolfenstein ET that is a more fast paced game I notice that when I'm running its not so clear as the CRT, but it's insignificant. So in my opinion this LCD is very good for games, but not perfect.

One thing that I was amazed was the scaling. I thought it would be much worse to run a game at 1024x768. But it doesn't make that much difference.

Now the bad news: LCDs of of this size suck if you have a digital photos with more than 1 megapixel. I have some photos at 2 and 3 megapixels, and this screen with 0,29 dot pitch its no match for my dynaflat with 0,20 dot pitch CRT. The colors are very good, or better than on the CRT, but the detail is awfull. On some photo the walls look dirty. In photos were we see a person with glasses, on the CRT we see the glasses are a circle, but on VP191b the glasses dont look like a circle because they look like a polygon made of many thin lines. Also in photos with faces in big plan the detail is awfull, it has more grain.

This is having the CRT at the same resolution 1280x1024. When I see the photos on the CRT at 1792x1344 I regret of having bought this monitor instead of a 21" CRT.

Seeing a photo similar to the one I was seeing you notice the detail of the VP191 is awfull compared to the CRT:

So I think VP191 8ms it's good for games and has no noticeable ghosting, but if you have a more than 1 megapixel digital camera and would like to see the photos with all the detail and quality the camera can offer you, dont buy a screen with a dot pitch of 0,29.

I also have one question about the monitor. Mine has an open space between the lcd panel and the plastic in front of it. Near the corners the space is closed, but increases as it gets near the center, and is enough space so I can insert a thin ruler there. You can see on these pictures what I'm talking about:

So I would like someone to confirm me that this is normal, and not a manufacturing fault.

My VP191b 8ms Serial#: A1W0514A3781 does not have the problems you indicated with the photo clarity. Looking at your photos show you do need to adjust your brightness, contrast and gamma settings. Also, all four sides of the bezel fit flush against the panel on mine. I wonder if yours may have been damaged.
