Hi guys,

I'm now with a laptop with an i5-8250U and a MX150, who sadly can't drive my monitor (a LG, 2560x1080p), it barely can run Nier: Automata, doing 45fps at low, 1366x768. So, I'm thinking of finally building a desktop. My objective with it is simply gaming (at medium-high settings, 2560x1080, 45-60 FPS), and emulation: RPCS3, PCSX2, CEMU, and in the future Yuzu and Orbital. my questions are:
  1. I'm in doubt about the gpu: should I get a RX 570 or a 580? 4GB of vram would suffice? (the GTX 1660 is out of question in my country)
  2. What cpu should I aim for: Ryzen 5 1600 AF or the 3500? Thinking that the 3500 is costlier but would be better for emulation
That's about it, thanks for all the help

PS: my plans (if going max cost with a RX 580 8GB and the 3500) would be to stay with it for at least 3 years without upgrading, if going cheaper I'd upgrade it in 1-2 years

Solution
I know these are in USD and bought in the USA, however, it can help you with would be OK for that gaming and expandable.

I was looking on Amazon.br and noticed that prices are far higher there than here.

This build makes sense to me, the 1600 AF is really close in performance to the 2600, but 2x8GB is nigh impossible on my budget.

Edit: Nope, this exactly build would cost me 3360 reais (with a much inferior case, this exact model costs a thousand here)

If you can save money by going with the 1600AF I would do that. Having the B450 motherboard means that with a BIOS update you can put in a Ryzen 3000 and probably 4000 series if you ever want to upgrade the CPU. The PSU has enough juice for higher end GPUs and the semi-modular design saves you from having a ton of cables in the case.

Edit: If you can save money by going with a SATA SSD I would do that. For SATA SSDs look at the WD Blue or Crucial MX500. They tend to be the cheapest of the high performance SATA SSDs.

For this build, do I need dual channel?

Rx 570 is better price to performance , especially on the used market. Unless the GPU prices in your country is lucrative. Vram wise not all titles are taxing on Vram unless they are openworld but its fine if you run out of Vram the gpu just dips into your Dram

If a GPU runs out of VRAM the performance tanks. Currently at 1080p you can get by with 4GB, however, it won't be long before that isn't enough.

Oh yeah, thats because Dram is slower than Vram iirc.

For sure some titles may push for more Vram in future but to state that there will be a high standard for Vram may not be the case for every coming title. From a business stand point game developers want to hit the market where their prospect revenue is high ofcourse and we cannot deny the fact that not everyone can afford $300+ Gpus, along with memory prices hiking again. This is just an opinion though.

True not everyone needs a $300 laptop. However, the RX 570 & 580 come in 8GB configurations and the added cost is minimal. Also back with the RX 480, the 8GB version was faster than the 4GB version.

Good point as it would be logical for board partners to bin better chips for an 8gb version.

Thanks for all the opinions, things changed a bit and I'll probably be buying an used 1060 (3GB) for half the price of an RX 580. Focusing on the CPU, that boost in single thread performance is worth (in emulators) the loss of SMT and 60% more price wise?
