I was going to be Overclocking my 9600p and was wondering if someone could tell me if i need ramsinks and if so, what brand? Could someone give me a link to a good set of ramsinks for this board? do I need to change the gpu cooling or is it ok as stock? I have never overclocked a video card before, what steps should I take when OC'ing the clock and memory?

my rig:
AMD XP 2500+ (200*10.5 @ 1.8v)
ABIT NF7-S v2.0
slk800-u with vantec stealth 80mm fan
2x 256mb Corsair 3200c2pt
Radeon 9600pro
Thermaltake Xaser 3 with 420w silent surepower thermaltake PSU

just get some thermaltake ramsinks and cut them to half. i used them on my R8500. or tweak monster ramsinks, they are good 2.

see below

IF you have NEVER overclocked before then read ALOT even the 'pros' mess-up every once in a while. HeHe!

My utility recommendations would be Rage3D Tweak from the Rage3D.com site, or the Omega drivers which come with RADclocker (which you could get seperatly too).

As for Ramsinks, they aren't NEEDED, and they probably won't give you TOO much more headroom but probably 'something'. The stock VPU cooling is good enough for 530+mhz, but who knows what YOU can do with more. The question really is what's your target, cause you can get pretty gigh on stock cooling. If you're serious and give us some 3Dmarks from your early attempts, then maybe I'll point you in the direction to find out more about volt mods and such. However for now stick with the basics. The stock cooling should give you a feel for your card.

The best 3dMarks I've been getting range between 3342-3358. I am just looking to improve my 3dmark scores a little bit but I want to increase my fps is my gameplay a reasonable amount. I play Morrowind, Counter-Strike, Delta Force Black hawk down, dungeon siege and other similar games. What kind of suggestions would you have now that you know this? what was the info about volt mods and other stuff you were going to tell me?

Thanks

My final 3Dmk link's been restored. HERE's my final 3Dmk03 marks (seen by most already))

Ok for your games the Omega drivers would be the best choice IMO, as for best scores, Rage3Dtweak would be the best choice for moded drivers. On the Stock gear you should expect about a 500mhz core and be able to reach at least 330 with the memory without issues, however some people have been a little disappointed (usually with 'Powered by' partners cards). I usually keep mine at 432/308 for longevity reasons (I want this card to work in my 'video editing rig' once it's done in my 'gaming' rig here).

Post some overclocked links (before and after for comparison [like we did]) and then I'll point you to the promised land (of volt mods) where you can fry your card at will. Remember it's a risk, and a recently found exploit.

As for ramsinks and bigger HSFs for the 9600pro go to somewhere like [H]ard|OCP and follwoing their 'cooling' and 'moddin' links to other sites that have the latest/rarest gear you're looking for.
You likely won't find TOO much out there as it is not a top of the line card and overclocks a hell of alot (usually) right out of the box. People who wanted THAT much more performance usually bought a 9500Pro, and 9700NP for the mid-range buyer, or went all out for the top end sky's the limit (in both perf. and price).

EDIT: Just a head's up alot of people (from what I have read) have experience little/or no gain and even a drop in performance after having added ramsinks. I'd start with the HSF if you GOTTA tweak and then move from there after a bit more research.

Thanks for the info Ape, I will try to OC a little bit right now and see what I get, after I do this I will post some links to show my scores. Thanks again

Yes, ramsinks lower performance because apparently there is a minimum temp threshold that the ram operates at peak. The 9600 pro ram runs cool anyway, i wouldnt mess with ramsinks on it.
