Hey everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my current CPU, i5-6600K, but looking for some answers and advice.

1. Can I use any Intel processor with my motherboard, ga-h170-gaming 3 ? I've looked online, but I'm getting some different results, or maybe I just don't understand.

2. Based on the above answer, should I just go with an i7 something or an i9 (if Possible)? Recently a lot of the new games are struggling with my current CPU (Cod, Madden, Starwars). And I'm starting to see a trend. I have a Nividia Geforce-1070 graphics card and 16GB of Ram. I'm not running into any issues on that front. My main concern i guess is that by buying i7, I'll just be replacing that sooner than I would like.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

1. You are limited t LGA 1151 up to 7th Gen such as the 7700. You need to check what BIOS you are currently running and update it for a 7th gen most likely.

2.You are limited to at most a 4 core 8 thread i7 7700/7700K. Personally I think a K is pointless sicne your board doesn't alow overclocking

If you can find a used i7 7700 for around 100-125 USD I would say go for it. Any higher then that is a rip off for a processor that is outperformed by mid range Intels and Ryzens at the 150-200 USD mark.

Yeah check in the bios or Windows.

How to check in Windows;

Had to go to the Bios. Any reason i shouldn't just update now, not having the cpu yet?

I see, 😁

Btw, you misread the conversation. 7700 as a choice only if for a good price and not wanting to overhaul. Amd was referred if were to overhaul.
Oh my bad.I just realized I need to turn off autocorrect. I meant to say Amd is crushing Intel with performance.

Z170 chipset is 6th and 7th generation. So the best you could do is an i7-7700k. Which is basically the same cpu you have now + hyperthreading.

What that means is that any simpker/older games like CSGO or LoL etc won't see much if any improvement. It'll only be the more cpu intensive games that use 5 or more threads that will see any benefit, and it won't be double, more like closer to 20-30fps difference at best. Right now that cpu is $200-$450 used-new on ebay.
Second best choice would be an i7-7700, which are going for $200-$300.

Sell your old stuff, mobo/cpu/ram for whatever you can get, even a package deal, and you'll have the core of a brand new pc instead of the end of an old pc for somewhere around the same price.
