Hey,

So, if I put an IAS jewel in armour it still increases attack speed right?
What if I out an Enhanced Damage jewel in armour? Does that enhance weapon
damage or just armour damage <g>. For armour read armour/hat/shield.

IAS jewels work in any equipment. ED jewels are a little different. It
enhances weapon damage, but I believe it is calculated differently then one
would expect. I honestly can't remember more than that.

Ok, I wondered if ED jewels work from the total damage of the weapon,
including any on-weapon ED or if they just work on the base damage of the
item.

i.e. A 10 damage sword with 100% ED on weapon gives 20 damage. If you socket
it with a 40% ED jewel does it then have 24 damage (+40% of base) or 28
damage (+40% of total or +40% of base then the 100% ED on weapon multiplies
it again)?

So, 24 or 28?

Also, do they have to be socketed in the weapon or can I put them in a helm?
(Unlikely I know but how will I know without asking?)

Thanks Mr Dog. 🙂

In a weapon, a jewel enhances the total physical damage of that weapon.
This means it takes into account any +Dam or +%ED on the weapon, and
then enhances that by the %ED on the jewel. Anywhere else, it simly
enhances the base damage of the weapon.

My my, doesn't "~misfit~" <misfit61nz@hooya.co.nz> look good in that
trenchcoat:

In most cases...

All sources of %ED on the weapon are summed, so pop a 40% ED jewel in a 200%
ED weapon, and it becomes a 240% ED weapon (weapon now does 3.4 times the
listed damage for that weapon type). Sources of %ED *off* the weapon (e.g.
stat bonuses, ED jewels in armour, damage auras, etc) are summed and then
apply to the adjusted total.

A little example:

Sword - 10-50 damage.
100% ED sword with 40% ED jewel = 140% ED sword -> sword does 24-120
damage.

Then apply off weapon ED:

40% ED jewel in armour
100 STR (1 STR = 1% ED for most weapon types)
150% ED from Might aura

Total off weapon ED = 40 + 100 + 150 = 290%ED.

Physical damage (min) = 24 * 3.9 = 93.6 (can't recall the rounding direction)
max = 120 * 3.9 = 468

If you have a specific example that you're wondering whether to put your ED
jewel in some weapon or in the armour/hat of some character, post the damage
(weapon stats, build - e.g. sources of ED), what merc, etc, and someone will
calculate for you where you'll get the most benefit from your ED jewel.

This is generally how I understand it to work as well. Except for the off
weapon ED part.

I disagree here. ED off weapon is not added into the Strength and Skill
bonus. It is added in separately at the end. So in your example above, the
adjusted base weapon damage is 24-120, and this is modified by skills and
strength ([24*3.5] - [120*3.5]) 84-420. Then the off weapon ED is added,
..4(10-50 [base weapon damage]). For a total of 88-440. The 40% ED on the
weapon effectively adds 14-70, while the 40% ED off weapon adds 4-20.

The difference being that on weapon ED is modified by Strength and Skill.
While off weapon ED is not, nor is it modified by on weapon ED.

Of course this is just how I understand things to work. So much has changed
from patch to patch that I might be remembering old info.

Mark

Cheers Stephen, it was more of a general, for future reference type
question.

Some info here, which indicates that off-weapon ED, stat based ED and skill ED
are summed and then applied, as I mentioned:

http://www.hut.fi/~tgustafs/weapondamage.html

And discussion here:

http://www.theamazonbasin.com/d2/forums/index.php?showtopic=49559&st=0&#entry531466

that indicates that, more or less, the same formula applies for both 1.09 and
1.10 final (although 1.10 beta had some tweaks to this formula).
