Quick Q on SSD Size

Basically, Just want a SSD to put windows 8 on and maybe photoshop/cinema 4d (graphic design programs).. how much space would windows 8 take up? and what else would be a good idea to put on a SSD.

you want a 120g ssd. windows 8 take 40-60g of space plus your aps and you want to leave room for the ssd to do wear leavening and garbage clean up.

I am using over half of my 256GB (238GB formatted) system SSDs. That said, I have a lot more programs installed than you do, and am sure I could clean them up to fit into the 111GB formatted capacity of a 128GB SSD. I would not go any smaller than that though.

120 GB minimum. Any smaller, and you will feel squeezed before too long.
Applications don't take up that much space individually, but you want some breathing room.

My 128GB Kingston has Win 8 Pro, and all the applications on it besides games.
Office 2013, Adobe Lightroom, Corel Video Studio and PaintShop Pro, etc etc.

Currently ~50GB used space. A 64GB would pretty much zero room for growth with my usage.

Cheers, Is it easy to move the OS onto the SSD later on, as I don't think I will have one on start-up?

Yes, especially if you prepare in advance. Whatever size mechanical drive you get, size the partition for C: no bigger than 111GB. If you get a SSD later, you'll just clone that partition onto the SSD.

Programs like Acronis TrueImage can clone drives. There are some free options too (e.g. Clonezilla), but I have not used any of those myself.
When you install Windows onto a new system drive, you will see options for creating a new partition in the available space. Just don't use the whole drive.

Ok cheers man, If i somehow do use the whole drive will that be a big problem?

No, before cloning it, you'll just need to uninstall programs and/or backup and delete data so the amount of used space will fit within the size limit of the SSD; then the clone will work.

for a 128 SSD, shall i partition my internal 1TB hard-drive to 120gb on start-up (guess I have to leave a few gb for the SSD?) And on this partition put the OS. Then when I receive my SSD clone the partition to the SSD (then delete it from the hard-drive?) from there I will easily be able to put programmes on it?

If I were going to do it that way, I'd set that initial partition to 100GB, not 120. Install the OS and any applications to it.
Then, when you get the SSD, clone/migrate only that partition to the SSD.

Partition the internal HDD to 111GB (or 238GB) for C: to install Windows. You'll partition the rest of it as D: (or E: ) once Windows is installed. That original size is based on the FORMATTED (not "raw") size of SSD you anticipate getting; 120GB SSDs format to 111GB, and 256GB SSDs format to 238GB.
After you clone that partition onto the SSD (and confirm that all is well), you can then delete the partition and then extend your data drive partition onto that space, OR you can just leave it there as a working backup of your SSD.
