Could I power my gpu without a motherboard by tripping the psu?

Quick answer.

No.

Without truly knowing more about what components you have and what you are trying to accomplish....

Do not do anything.

Explain and include hardware information.

Yes.

1. Find the PSU
2. Find the bright green cable that runs to the 24 pin connector.
3. Follow it to the 24 pin connector plug.
4. Next to the green wire there is a black wire. These 2 cables is the on switch.
5. Find a wire that you will be able to connect the 2
6. Make sure that wire you use is not a naked wire but covered in the area you touch.
7. Connect the 2 and turn on the PSU or plug it in.
8. You can leave the wire connected and control the on and off via the PSU power button or the wall power switch.

If the PSU only has 1 color on the 24pin cables...It would be best not to try it if you dont have experience in this yet.

Caution:

What the above process does is create an electrical short condition that bypasses the normal shutdown switch on the computer.

The computer has its' own power switch on the case for a reason. The PSU switch is not intended for normal use to power on or power off the computer.

Again it is important that you explain more about what problem is occurring and/or exactly what you are trying to do.

If, for example, the case power switch is broken then replacing the switch would be recommended.

May not be at all difficult for the most part depending on the computer's make and model.

Please post more information starting with computer's make and model. Motherboard and case information will be helpful if you are working with a custom rig.
