Quiet... But hot! New cooler?

I've been mucking around with adding switches which undervolt my fans (to 5V from 12), for the sake of noise.

I've only done the Casefans at the moment (2 intake, 1 exhaust), and plan to also do the CPU, Gfx card(Going to replace the stupid blower in my VGA Silencer with an 80mm Fan), and modify the twin PSU fans.

There's a definite reduction in noise, and I reckon it'll be near silent when I've got the other Switches wired in  , but of course Temps are a bit of an issue. With the heating on, and windows shut my Case temp will go as high as 37C or so, and my CPU about 59C - under constant load as I'm always running Folding@home.

CPU is a T-bred 'B' 1700+ @ 2.2Ghz (11x200), 1.55V. Cooler is a Volcano 7+ with the original 70mm fan replaced with an 80mm one (but with no special ducting/converter - it's just kind of bolted on top so 'overlaps' the HS a little, and isn't that efficient really..)

I would like to replace the CPU cooler, but not sure what would be a good price/Performance one. I'm very tempted by the Swiftech MCX462-V, but it's a bit pricey. Any ideas what sort of CPU Temp I'd get with that beast on there? Or is there a better cooler which costs a lot less?

I don't really want to reduce my CPU Fan RPM if it's going to push the poor thing over 60C.

If it is stable, and wont go to much over 60, then I wouldnt worry too much ... I did a test one time and could keep my hand in 58C hot water so I guess that it is not too bad. Better CPU cooler might not be as efficient as that the same hot air that will be in the case for cooling..better try to add a small fan at the top of the case.

I start with quiet fans, then cut them to 7v, not 5v. Some fans won't even start right at 5v.

Nope, it's far too hot. Got it running @ 2Ghz, 1.425V, but it's still going over 60C. Case temp is only 35C, which is warm but shows it's not a case airflow problem at least (with all the casefans going it drops by 2 or 3C)

I need a better HSF! A possible problem will be that rather huge NB HSF I have. I think It's going to get in the way of any HS with a large base. Partly because of that, and partly because the sites I've so far looked at don't stock the SLK-900U, what do you think of the SI-97? That looks like It'll give me enough clearance/Mounting options to overcome the NB HS.

They have the SLK-800U there. What's the difference between that and the 900? I suspect I simply won't have room though :frown: .

Do you know a good place with a round-up of these coolers? It seems difficult to get a nice big comparison - they only test each new one against one or two others at once. What would be really useful would be a list like Tom's CPU charts, or VGA charts, but with CPU coolers. Would make it much easier to see at-a-glance the relative performance.

THG even used to do that. I haven't seen a good HSF review from them in a while. :( Oh well.

All that I can think of off hand is a visit to Frosty Tech.

Let me guess, you're using a CPU heatsink on that nForce2 right? If so which one?
Yup. It used to cool my Athlon 800. No Fan or anything, just the HS.

Think it was a globalwin something or other. All Aluminium. Got me an Extra 10FSB Stable, which got me over 200Mhz  . Worth it, IMO.

Useful Site, thanks!

Fans are OK - I considered 7V, but thought I'd try 5 first. Very quiet, but my CPU temp definitely suffers. They're only cheapo generic 80mm fans so they're not that quiet to start with.

If it bothers you that much and you still want to keep it overclocked why not build one of Scottchens garbage can water-coolers. It will probably be cheaper in the long run.

I've thought about it, and my next rig will probably be water-cooled. Either that or I'll go the whole hog and get a Vapochill or something

My SI-97 has arrived! I'll install it tonight.

While I'm at it, I'll remove the stupid blower fan from my VGA silencer and bolt on a 80mm Fan..

So if I don't post for a few days, I've either screwed my CPU or my graphics card.

Well, I installed the Cooler, but had to do some other stuff so haven't done anything to the VGA silencer yet...

This thing is much better than the old one. I was running 1.4V, 2Ghz and hitting around 62-63C with a system temp of 35 or so (with the older cooler), but this morning (after running all night @ 1.55/2.2Ghz) it was only at 52C, with System temp of 36. Switched the Casefans back up to 12V and about 3 mins later it was 33/49.

The new thing does overhang the NB HS, but only by about 3mm or so.. So another cooler might have just about cleared it, but it would have been close. I think the airflow from the fan will probably still help the NB stay cool.

Think I forgot to mention the Fan's a 92mm Vantec Stealth. The noise difference between it at 12V and 5V is almost totally imperceptible, so I'll leave it at 12 I think.

Nah, it's impossible for you to screw up.
I'm glad I didn't read that before I installed the fúcker. Would've killed something for sure then!

I'm just hoping you'll get more OC out of that 2500+.
Well, I think it should be possible. I did a quick run @ 205x12, 1.75V and it did crash, but didn't get above 53-54C(ish), so I think it's given me more room to manuever. Pretty sure at those settings the old cooler would have rapidly have hit well over 65C.

I'll try for a stable 2.3Ghz tonight I think  Current Stable best with this chip is ~2.25Ghz, at either 196x11.5 or 205 x 11.

Oh, and it's a 1700+, not a 2500+

I have only 7 Days, according to the overtake stats :frown: .

fully 4 of the machines which I had 'stealth' folding  here at work are at a trade show until the end of the week. I hope they had all started some nice big folds to keep them busy, and aren't sat there trying to send results...(no 'net connection).

You're one of those few who owns a 1700+ JIUHB right?
Yup

You know your 8RDA+ has 2.2V for vcore right???
I didn't, no... but that's probably why I still have the chip  Maybe if I buy a Vapochill.....

Aren't you suppose to run it at ~1.85V or something?
Was running F@H overnight at 1.75V, 11.5x200 (2.3Ghz). temps were 35/58 (In 'quiet' mode)..

It'll get more stress testing today, as my flatmate's at home so it'll have a few hours of Rome:TW... If I get home and he complains that it kept crashing, then it's not 100% I guess

I'm just surprise it still runs stable 58C under load
Well, I haven't tried any heavy-duty gaming or anything yet... once I've got a hot 9800 in there too, it might push it over the edge..

Temps were 36/60 this morning. it seems to crash at anything above ~63, although I haven't really put any effort into checking that.

Once I fit the fan to the Silencer it might help some more, as there will be a small amount of overlap & it'll be pushing some air over the Northbridge HS towards the CPU cooler.

It's only the casefans that I switch. I've got a stealth 92mm on the CPU cooler, and although it's hooked up to a 12V-5V switch, I can't actually hear any difference between the two  , so I leave that one on 12V all the time. I only go 'quiet' overnight, as the pc's in my bedroom.

The difference between having all the casefans at 12V and 5V is about 4-6C it seems. Full load CPU temp seems to be around 23C above system temp. Seeing what my idle temp is would entail stopping folding for a time... and that I'm not going to do  I've lost enough time through all my hardware fiddling as it is....

What flavor liquid are you using. I found some stuff at the auto parts store that dropped my temps another 5 degrees right off the fly.

To save us both time, assume I know EVERYTHING
