Hello hello,

As I save up for a new system (crossing fingers for early November) I had originally planned on putting a couple of 4770's for both decent performance and low power/heat but more importantly low sound issues. Now, with the dawn of the 5xxx series, I think about tossing in two 5850's, or perhaps 1 5870 with an i750 or better for great performance... and then I forget the issues beyond performance. What concerns me is the sound/power/heat that some of these newer cards kick off compared to the 4770. I like to make systems that don't need upgrades for quite a few years when I first make them, and I'm wondering if that pair of 4770's needs more power in the mix.

Was the 4770 just one of those combination of the "right stuff" and not likely to come up again? Is the difference between 30 and 50 decibels really that bad of an increase (in my working area, my current system with one little tiny fan running at full blast is pretty loud and I wanted to quiet things down)? Are there addons, cases, attachments, or other goodies that help dampen sound? Am I just looking at having to create a sound-proof box (somehow with good air flow?) to slap things in? Am I missing some sort of dark horse card that packs a lot of power while hardly making a whisper?

Some of this may be answered in the next few weeks as more of the mid-range 5xxx cards come out, but I'd love to plan as best I can.

Thank you again for your feedback and time.

The 5770 should be pretty quiet, if not near silent.

You should be able to get 58x cards that are quiet in future, but right now you can be pretty sure that they are noisy and hot.

If noise annoys you (it annoys me a lot), the chances are the 58x cards aren't for you yet. My 4770's were amazing in the power they gave out and the lack of noise. Here's hoping the 5770's will be the same. I just wish I could wait longer for them to arrive :), but I can't and I'll be buying a 5850 because I need the power for eyefinity.

If you always want to set every graphic to max, then sooner rather than later you will need to upgrade your system no matter what you currently decide to install.

Currently the best performance/"quiet" combo is probably the HD 4770. The upcoming HD 5770 will probably the better choice. You may need to install a 3rd party HSF to decrease noise.

The difference between 30dBA and 50dBA is like studying for an important test in a room with little noise compared to trying to study in a room with a couple of people having a conversation right next to you.

Thank you for the replies on this one.

I /hope/ the 5770's are close to silent. Jennyh, let us know how the 5850 turns out sound wise. Toms put them ~ 40-44 decibels (for a single), and I'm surprised that hardocp couldn't here the card. They do put the caveat of they couldn't hear it over the CPU fan, case, CD-rom spinning, etc., so I wonder what sort of noise their setup makes. It does seem to be quieter, though, than the 5870.

Thank you again on the feedback. I haven't even gotten to CPU fan/heatsinks and noise issues yet, but there's a lot for me to check on that first.
