I need help choosing a quiet heatsink for my digital audio pc.
After tons of research I have a few in mind-

thermalright ultra 120 extreme

scythe ninja copper (newer but not good heat dissapation- can use TR bold thru)

scythe ninja (older heatsink- can use TR bolt thru)

zipang (great but uses pushpins on a huge and heavy heatsink)

Any opinioins or advice?

thanks

Shouldn't need any more, your choices are good. Me? The TRUE is the best. Please pay close attention to TIM application and only mount a CPU block with the Mobo out of the case, pushpins or not.

When you are aiming for queit, size begins to matter more. The tests performed at frostytech are using the fans they came with, but for really quiet you'll just want to have a fan controller. an Inline unit for a couple of bucks from zalman will let you tune the fan right to where you want it. Some fan controllers allow you to turn the fan off, you would not want that, so get one that only limits the speed. The other option is just buying a slow fan or two to accompany what the heatsink comes with, and you can fiddle with it as necessary to keep it cool and quiet.

alright thanks all!
I guess I will take a shot with the thermalright ultra 120 extreme unless someone convinces me otherwise within the next couple days.

"Please pay close attention to TIM application and only mount a CPU block with the Mobo out of the case, pushpins or not."

What exactly does TIM application mean?
and I dont exactly follow the rest of the quote either!

thanks

The thermal paste needs to be applied properly in the right amount depending if you have a dual or quad core. I'll let you figure it out, Google is your friend. And good TIM paste is better than the stuff the HS comes with. I use MX-2 TIM, a popular one.

I think instead of CPU block I meant HS cooler, water or air cooled, either way.

Also, I have read to many stories about peeps trying to mount a pushpin HS and screwing it all up because they didn't look on the bottom of the mobo to ensure the pins are locked down. Broken Mobos to smoked mobos.

Not to worry, you'll HAVE to remove the mobo to install your HS anyway.
