Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 8300 with an i7 2600, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 6670 and 2 x WD SATA 1TB HDDs.
I'd like to use this machine as a file/Plex server but it's pretty loud and probably drawing more power than it needs to for a home server.
After playing around a little it looks like the PSU and the hard drives are responsible for most of the noise. I can deal with the HDDs myself but I'm looking for some advise on the PSU.
It's currently got the 460W 'D460AD-00' CPU that came in the box.
Based on a little research my concerns are
a) Getting a replacement PSU that will fit in the case
b) Getting an upgrade that's fairly quiet but won't cost a lot (sub $100)
c) Getting one that will supply enough power
c) What I'll need to do about the power switch on the new PSU (cut a hole in the back of the case?)
I'm not looking for a silent PC, just a cheap, easy replacement PSU to deal with most of the noise. If I can reduce power consumption at the same time then great!
If it makes a difference: the PC was purchased in the UK (240v) and I'm now based in Australia - I mention this second bit as I have no idea which h/w suppliers here in Aus are cheap and reputable.
So, any PSU recommendations based on those requirements?
How about this? - Antec Neo Eco 450W 80 Plus Bronze. 84 Aussie dollars from mwave.com.au
