Quiet sounds muted in Windows 8

Hi. Since installing some music programs (Ableton and Audition), I've found that quieter sounds (the background audio between the actor's lines in a TV show, for example) are muted.

I had this problem before but can't remember how I fixed it

Right click your volume icon at the bottom right of your screen, select playback devices. Set the default playback device as your speakers.

Click on the communication tab and select do nothing.

Set To Default is greyed out - perhaps because my monitor headphone jack is the only audio output I have right now (my local audio repairman is in hospital...) but I haven't noticed any drops since I did the communications thing.

Alright, if you haven't noticed any audio drops keep the settings.Does the audio drops only happen in those 2 programs? If you do have again try using another headphone or earphone to rule out that its not the audio equipment causing this.

It happens once I've opened one of the programs, but it happens across the board, in Chrome, VLC etc until I restart.

Try a system restore. Revert back to time before you installed those 2 programs.
