I currently have the original fan and heatsink that came with my Pentium 4 3.06 GHz 533 MHz FSB Socket 478 processor and it's simply too noisy. Any suggestions on a cpu fan that's much more quiet yet cheap/affordable???

TIA

P.S. - I'd rather keep the heatsink and replace the fan if I could (i'm dreading having to use that paste stuff (it's currently using the pad))

You're better off getting a new heatsink/fan combo, as Intel HS/F uses

tabs to hold on the fan, that are different than those of aftermarket fans.

It's a pain in the butt to do, as you'll have to jury rig it with ties. :x

Yes they're right about getting the HSF rather than replacing the fan of the stock cpu cooler. You can get a good one anywhere from $30-$60 and can drop the temps as much as 10c over stock cooling. I myself have used a Thermaltake Big Typhoon ($50) and got good results as it was overclocked as well but gives me 45c idle and 55c full load. It's pricey yes but it's a very good investment. 😀
